Today is Mahalaya. It's the first day of the ten days leading to the worship of the Goddess Durga. This day, in the morning, Hindu Bengalees pray for their forefathers. The religious ceremony is performed by a river. Many will be gathering at the banks of the Hoogly river, which is a branch of the holy Ganga. However, this day also heralds a time of great happiness and frolic in the state of Bengal, almost as joyful as Christmastide in Christian countries. Our foster children rose at half past four to watch the TV programs of Durga slaying the Mahisasur (the buffalo demon), which every year is enacted by different actors, in different dances and music.

I'm glad you're having a great time. Half past four is an early hour for children to rise. Perhaps they'll go to bed a bit earlier too.

@franxav That's good. Some of them might need it.

This must be a joyful holiday event in your country. I admit I don't personally pray for my forefathers but the religion does include forefathers in the prayers.

As a Christian, I don't take part in the worship of the Goddess but I do enjoy watching the temporary temples and the idols. The decorations of light is worth seeing during these days.
