Today is Mahalaya. It's the first day of the ten days leading to the worship of the Goddess Durga. This day, in the morning, Hindu Bengalees pray for their forefathers. The religious ceremony is performed by a river. Many will be gathering at the banks of the Hoogly river, which is a branch of the holy Ganga.
However, this day also heralds a time of great happiness and frolic in the state of Bengal, almost as joyful as Christmastide in Christian countries. Our foster children rose at half past four to watch the TV programs of Durga slaying the Mahisasur (the buffalo demon), which every year is enacted by different actors, in different dances and music.

This must be a joyful holiday event in your country. I admit I don't personally pray for my forefathers but the religion does include forefathers in the prayers.

The real holidays will begin after six days but the holiday mood has already gripped the people.
