Power is Flickering

A few minutes ago I heard what sounded like a transformer somewhere close by blowing up. Just seconds ago, the power here at the house started flickering. Should I suddenly disappear for a while, it will be because the power went out. Just when I thought we were outside the area of having to worry about that...

It is raining cats and dogs here. There are flooding problems throughout the county and our power has flickered twice. I am now charging my phone and a little USB lamp that I have just in case it is needed. The internet has gone down and I am waiting for it to come back up. There are closings in counties at the border of NC and VA. The state fair is not opening today either. Have they closed your school district and the school you work for?

@DWDavis The internet has returned or I wouldn't have been able to post this. I suppose I should have deleted that line, whoops! It did take a few minutes of tinkering with it though. I'm not the best with it. We have the modem, router and an extender. The extender is necessary for the internet to reach the far ends of the house. the modem and router are in the middle of the house. I didn't see anything about WSFCS being closed or delayed, but I wasn't paying that much attention either. I usually see the parents post about if on facebook but nothing so far. I hope your power stays on as well. I'm sitting here wondering if I should go ahead and fix supper now. I'm not making anything major, just some onion rings and french fries.

@DWDavis I haven't checked the forecast here in several hours, however, I think that the same could be said for here. It was just rain the last time I checked. I will be glad if it is all gone, though I do welcome the cooler temperatures.

The public schools were closed today and on a 3-hour delay tomorrow. My school closed at 1 pm and we're on a normal schedule tomorrow. That's the nice thing about not having to run buses. I hope your power stays on and your internet returns soon.

It is raining harder and steadier now, but the winds seem to have leveled off and probably won't get much stronger. If the power lines can hang on a few more hours, the storm will have moved on past us. Friends in the western part of the state have lost power, though, and my son in Raleigh says the street flooding there is getting worse.

@wolfgirl569 When I try to read some of the stories about Florida, I just stare at the photos in disbelief. They remind me so much of the devastation Hurricane Andrew made of Homestead back when.

@DWDavis Hope it all passes you soon. I took a look at some of the news stories just a few minutes ago. Florida looks awful.

I think when it's flickering something has became loose on the line. When that happens here I shut down the main power switch or circuit breaker and shift to emergency lighting, in my case we have solar but it's just for lights and not capable of driving appliances. The reason I do this is to prevent damage to our appliances and eletronic gadgets, usually I wait it out for a few minutes or worst hours, at times the company shuts it down completely most probably to prevent more damage in their system or fires.

I have often thought of installing solar, but so far the cost has outweighed the benefit.

@DWDavis it's not that expensive now especially if its just for lighting a few led bulbs that are already available in DC instead of converting to 110v ac so a need for the expensive inverter is eliminated. Cheap 50 watt solar panels and charge controllers can be had on ebay though I don't know the effect of Trump's trade with China on the price. If it's just for lighting, a second hand used car battery would do ( just check if they still hold charge with a small load) instead of buying those expensive deep cycles. The set up would be good enough for starters, a lot of convenience during emergencies and an excellent weekend DIY project that would cost more or less just a hundred bucks. Good luck and stay safe.

@louievill I have one solar panel I use for my camper, and I've been thinking about getting a second one. Perhaps I will wait until the storm has passed as the price is probably higher now and will come down after things get back to normal.

Presumably this has to do with Hurricane Michael coming over your way?

Yes, these are the Tropical Storm remnants of that catastrophic hurricane. We're getting this wind and rain here in NC on the heels of Hurricane Florence that clobbered us less than a month ago.

Do you have any sort of backup? A generator perhaps?

I have a solar panel I use for the camper but no generator. As rarely as I'd use it, I can't justify the initial expense and upkeep.

@JudyEv When we retire in a few years and start traveling more with the camper, we may buy a small one for those times we might stay at a site without electric hookups.

@DWDavis We have one here but of course our circumstances are slightly different. If we have a major bushfire they often cut the power off and then we'd have no electric pump for water.
