Storm Callum is heading my way!

Ireland
October 11, 2018 3:14pm CST
The Atlantic Ocean has just given Florida the hugely destructive Hurricane Michael, and now it has turned its attention eastward and is sending a big storm towards me in Ireland. It's called Storm Callum, and although not on the scale of the hurricanes that lash America, this storm is not to be sniffed at, with 130 kilometre winds and torrential rain expected tonight. Fingers crossed for me please! PS Who names these weather phenomena? At the rate they are coming, there'll soon be no names left

Yikes, stay safe Norman. World Meteorological Organization develops a list of names that are assigned in alphabetical order to tropical storms as they are discovered in each hurricane season. Names can be repeated after an interval of six years, but the names of especially severe storms are permanently retired from use.

@NormanDarlo You are very welcome. I hope things are safe in your world. I think it does apply because the story I read about Callum said the two storms before it were named Ali and Bronagh so far this season. Here is a link for you:
Ali will be the first storm to blow in across the UK and Ireland this winter, the new list of names for this year's strongest weather systems shows. Also on the list of storm names for

@KimJohnson @CarolDM Thanks for that info, Carol. I wonder whether that applies to our storms up here in the non-tropics. Ours don't seem to be following alpha order anyway: Ophelia last October, Emma in March, Hector in June, and now Callum

I didn't know that Carol. Hope your family was safe. I know they live around Pensacola?

I do hope you stay safe. Our son and his wife live in Co. Meath near Kintale so perhaps they're copping it too. No wonder the hothouse we bought them didn't last too long .

@NormanDarlo He has lived in Ireland since somewhere round the late 1990s. We have been over 3 or 4 times. We love Ireland.

Sorry to hear about the glasshouse - was it victim of a storm? I'd be very upset if I lost my one! Thanks for the wishes, Judy, there was no serious damage here in the southeast, nor I believe up in Meath. It was the west that bore the brunt. Is it Kiltale (rather than Kintale) they are in? The only Kintale I know of is far away in Donegal

@JudyEv Yeah, I think I know the place. My brother also lives in Meath. I hope your son is finding Ireland welcoming, whatever about the weather! Have you visited?

@normandarlo All's quiet so far up here. Hopefully the weather people are just being overly cautious.

Well they were overly incorrect about the projected path, so we were spared the worst of it down here in the sunny southeast. Where is 'up here', Fiacre?

@NormanDarlo am sorry that there were some fatalities.

@Hannihar Every fatality is a cause of regret, but for a major storm, it is a relatively light toll.

Thank you, Hanni. It passed by a little further away than feared, so nothing major happened here, although I heard of a couple fatalities in Britain.

How far away from you is it?

It was off our west coast in the above screenshot and it passed more to the north than expected, so most of the madness remained out at sea. Lucky us! Good to see you here, Gary!

I think some folks may still be without power in the southwest, but damage was confined to a few downed trees here in the east, and as far as I know, no serious injuries
