This morning I worked for four hours at my friend's preschool in Martinez CA. During outside play, I spied a child crying. I sat close to him and asked what had happened. He said a dinosaur had hurt him. I asked him to tell me more, and he explained that a friend was throwing dinosaurs into the sand box, and that he (his friend) had hit him in the head during his back swing. I checked his forehead, and sure enough, the was a small area with a small cut and a bit of swelling. I summoned the dinosaur-thrower over, made it clear that I wasn't mad at him, and had him check the injury with me. We them both put kisses on the injury, and I took the dinosaur-injured child in to get some ice for the wound.

I hope he doesn't catch the dinosaur-disease where he will disappear and no one can figure out what happened.

I hope to see him tomorrow. If he's extinct, I'll let you know.

Absolutely! Hugs and blown kisses and looks of deep concern, tinged with just the slightest hint of humor, are the most often used items in my medicine chest.

@TheHorse we were at a wedding once and a little girl burnt her finger slightly with a candle. Vince coaxed her out of her tears and was taking photos saying 'show me how you look when it's hurting' and she'd start crying. Then 'show me how you look when it's not hurting' and she'd give this radiant beam. She could turn the tears on and off like a tap.

I hope you explained to the thrower that what he was doing was not nice and could be dangerous. Someone has to tell kids that you must behave, what if he hit an eye of the young boy? I am not a lot for "permissive education". Kids are not stupid and they must know what they must not do.

@TheHorse Also when my uncle stuck a pen in the eyes of his little sister was an accident, but she lost the eye.

@LadyDuck That's really sad. I think we should get some "squishy balls" for this preschool so the kids can throw things that aren't potentially dangerous. I will suggest that.

I did tell him to be more careful with his dinosaur throwing acrivities. It truly was an accident.

Well, I don;t want to appear sexist, but yes. Conking each other on the head and recovering quickly is just part of being a boy. And most girls too.

Only with young kids can you get a dinosaur attack story. Glad it is nothing serious

@wolfgirl569 Absolutely! And I hope the parents from the preschool, in Berkeley keep the pictures we took of their kids at play.

We did an "incident report": "Your son was struck on the forehead by a dinosaur today...," but I think he's going to be OK.

Seems like a day to day situation in my Montessori class when I was working. Kisses and hugs always resolve the matter.

I enjoy the fact that when kids say, "I hate you and you can't come to my birthday party and I'm not going to be your friend for a hundred hundred zillion years," it really means, "I'm frustrated with you right now." They're usually playing happily together again within about 20 minutes.

@TheHorse Childhood is a playground of soul. I think it is good to work with children. They always keep you young at heart.

Crisis remedies for sure. I am glad that that is probably the biggest injury of the day at the pre school.

You have to use your musical skills to teach these kids to walk the dinosaur, not throw it.
"Walk the Dinosaur" is a hit single recorded and released by the band Was (Not Was) in 1987, later featured on their hit 1988 album, What Up, Dog?. When rele...

Wow! You should have reported that to the local newspapers, pony! Think of all the publicity you could have gotten for the school if people believed you were letting their kids play with living dinosaurs!

lol I thought dinosaurs had returned to the Earth. You scared me. Oh, that poor child. Glad you straightened it all out. I remember one of my hissy fits when I was little. I actually threw wood blocks you know that one with letters on at kids. Stupid me.

@TheHorse oh, yes. I had to pick up all the blocks I threw and I had to apologize to all the children I threw them at.

@TheHorse -- don't you wish we could keep that aspect of our childhood (falling and getting up with no injury) into adulthood?

Fortunately, Most of the injuries are pretty minor. A new young friend did a front flip and landed on his back today. He is four. I gave him a hug and checked in with him. He was OK. There were no tears.
