My Kentucky Memory

I love horses. I think they are majestic powerful creatures. Although I have never had the opportunity to actually ride a horse. The closest I came to something like riding on a horse was when at about age 7 or 8, my mom took me to a pony farm where they gave pony rides to small children. The only other experience I've had with horses was when I went on a trip to Lexington, Kentucky.
Not trying to offend anybody who is from or who lives in that state, but … I don't know how the people can breathe! When I got off the plane and walked into the airport … WHOA!! The air was so thick you could cut it with a knife! It smelled like horse poop! I'm not exaggerating. It took some getting used to. My memory is a bit faded as it was about 20 years ago. I think I was there for about a week. When I got back on the plane to go home, quite frankly, I was happy to be leaving. But! I had heard about the Kentucky Derby all my life. I couldn't go to Kentucky and not at least see one horse before I left! So I visited the Horse Park. It was wonderful!

I just love horses and always have to take photos with them when I am around them. I have always dreamt of going to see the Kentucky Derby perhaps one day I will be able to. You mentioned that everything smelled of horse poop well imagine living in the days of no other transportation but horse and buggy, especially in the big cities.

You won't believe it but I have actually imagined it.

How do we breathe? Poorly.
I went to a miniature golf tournament 70 miles from Louisville over a weekend. Within three hours of being back in Louisville (after just being 70 miles away) I couldn't breathe....and I couldn't talk above a whisper for almost two weeks.
We're not only horse capital of the world, we're asthma capital of the world.

Sorry to hear that. I had a brother and a son who suffered from asthma. I don't know if they could even visit Kentucky, much less live there.

@playertwo -- oh, it's gorgeous, absolutely. The eastern part of the state is mountainous, and you have the beautiful Bluegrass region (where the horse farms are), and the area near the Mississippi River. Wall to wall beauty, certainly. I just have to enjoy it in a bubble suit in the spring.
