People Eat A Lot

Till a few years back I never realized how much food people eat per day. I know some eat more than others. I did a little figuring and the amount of food needed per year was staggering. If everyone had to grow/ raise and kill then home can all the food they eat each year there would probably not be an obesity problem. No wonder the people in the food industry is rich! Lets just start with vegetables, three a day = three one cup meals. You will need to home can 1,092 one half pint jars of food. AND that is eating minimal. So if you eat 2 vegetables and 1 meat twice a day, you`ll need, 2,184 half pint jars. That is just for one person! Double that for a married couple = 4,368 If you had to store that food you would need a root cellar. Have you ever thought about how much food you eat each year?

I could not agree more Angie, when you grow your own food, it makes you realize just how much we can eat. I am constantly working on ways to cut down my own personal food consumption. Yes.

If I bought only healthy food I think it would be cheaper and I would eat less, but society has programmed our minds to eat "other"food.

If it came to me doing all of the work for food we wouldn't be eating as much. We have a big family so our food consumption is most likely a good amount.

Back in the old days 3 of your 5 would be working on the farm, growing and tending animals, all for food.

I don't think about how much I eat. But I always think about how much food people waste. Especially in America. It's a disgrace.

I never put it all into perspective for a year but even with just two of us living here I'm sure we consume way more food than I think we do.

I only became aware when I began my journey to get off the grid. With this knowledge I know I cannot go all the way off grid, nor can I be total Green. Big sigh.

I have what my grandparents called a canning cellar. I've never canned anything and the shelves are full of extra dishes etc. I know it sounds awful but I see people on Facebook who are ones and they say how they can barely afford to feed their family with how expensive food is and how low pay jobs are. I think they need to cut back on the amount of food they eat then they would have a lot more money! Similar to your home canning idea making you realize something I had a similar feeling when doing dishes the other day. If my kids and I ate only processed stuff all the time like chicken nuggets etc I would have so much less dishes to do. I do two to three loads of dishes a day since I make so many home cooked foods.

@andriaperry oh no I didn't mean I intended to stop cooking from scratch but was just thinking how that really is what is causing so much dishes. Right now with not having hot water to wash them in I am trying to cut down on how much dirty dishes are made so I've been happy to have leftovers to eat!

Yes, it takes a lot to feed us. I freeze some of our vegetables, because I love the taste, and knowing that they were put up fresh, and still I don't do enough to last us all of the way thru the 3 seasons that they aren't available fresh.

@andriaperry It can be a meal, or half of a meal. Do you like crepes? I love them, and will make them and roll up fresh fruit in them. No other filling, just the fresh fruit, and I really enjoy it.

Highly developed countries have health problems because of over-eating and developing countries have health problems because of starvation. It's a mad world. There are also fat Europeans. But obesity seems to be most widespread in the USA. Any theories why that is the case?

In the 1970`s the food stamp program came to life in the USA. The government gives food to people who qualify, many lie to get the free food., many do need it. That leads to not being forced out to work because they are not hungry enough to get up and go. By staying home people develop depression and eat to satisfy that "emptiness." Then end up at the doctors office with a diagnosis of depression and get a check from the government for being mentally ill. Now they, people, have a free income and free food....ohh and free health insurance! BUT, don`t get me wrong food stamps used properly help when people lose their job or become sick with cancer and other non curable diseases, and they help SO much for families that work their tales off but still need that little extra to feed the kids. Also a few elderly get $15 in food stamps ( US dollars) each month. That is my theory on why the USA is obese. NOTE: I am not skinny by any means, I am 20 pounds over weight, I do not get food stamps, I use the money I earn to buy food and I grow my food.

You're so right. My mother would bottle (it's 'bottle' in Australia) a lot of fruit during the season and make a lot of jam but we didn't bottle vegetables for some reason.

@andriaperry I understand what you are saying. I used to eat a lot but from the summer before this or the one before that I just wanted to drink and before in winter I used to eat a lot because it was so cold and and then last winter I was not hungry much so I lost weight and want to keep it off. So far so good.

Totally agree with you. I grow veggies in my garden and make it as a learning lessons for my daughters. It takes 10_12 weeks for a carrot to grow and only a second to throw it out of your plate to dustbin. This has definitely helped my kids to have reverence for food and for those who grow it for us. And not to forget if you have reverence for your own body, you will stick to right kind of food and not fill it up with junk.
