What To Do If You Are A Picky Eater?

I mentioned the other day that I do a low carb diet because of my diabetes. My other dilemma is that I am a picky eater. So how do I get the nutrients that I need? I don't like fruit (but those aren't low carb anyways) and I don't like vegetables (except for potatoes). I have tried to like vegetables....but I just can't. The only way I might get some greens in is with a green smoothie. Are any of you picky eaters? How do you deal with it and get in the nutrients you need?

I think find the foods that you like and is appropriate for your condition and focus on that. The rest of the nutrients you have to take them maybe by Multivitamins to supplement the deficiency you are not taking.

@MommyOfEli2013 The problem here is when most of your preferred foods is not good for you. you reall have to make some changes in the way you eat your food.

@rsa101 That's my problem, but I can only change so much.

This is something I have trouble with too. For me, a lot of foods tend to trigger my gag reflex regardless of whether I like the taste or not. Something about certain textures just doesn't seem to agree with me. What aspects of the fruits and vegetables do you struggle with the most? What kind of foods do you like to eat?

@MommyOfEli2013 I like those same things. I have never really been able to handle meat beyond pepperoni and bacon but I don't really enjoy them. I am also terrible with vegetables but I have been able to work them into my diet... sort of. I can handle spinach pasta just fine or spinach and ricotta ravioli. And there are a few veggie pastas out there that are not bad. Eventually I hope to get brave enough to try spaghetti squash since it seems to work for some people as an alternative. I am also a fan of pesto. Fruits are... hit or miss. I can eat bannanas and watermelon, and recently discovered I can eat grapes! I got curious about the cotton candy flavored ones and gave them a try recently and I have also found I can eat them and the gumdrop ones. Moondrops tasted good too but I couldn't swallow them easily. The skin on the outside made it difficult. The best thing I can recommend is chaining food. take a look at the foods you like, and try to look for some variation that has the same or similar elements. As an example I liked pizza, so trying out tomato soup with some cheese and some bread worked out. From there I moved on to red pepper and tomato soup etc. Also, watch cooking shows and dig through the internet looking for recipes that look appealing to you that might have the foods you need to eat. If there is something you know you do not like and can't handle in a recipe (Often times for me it is chopped onions which I use onion powder instead) you can sometimes exclude entirely or use a substitute.

@things4gotten Oh wow, only pepperoni and bacon? I like most meats...but can only eat them for so long, or a certain way. That's great that you have been able to work some vegetables into your diet, it is hard when you are picky; have trouble with certain foods. But those sound like great ideas/tips with adding some in. Yes, fruits are very difficult as well...glad you found another fruit you can eat. I tried grapes, but just couldn't do it. I found I can have blueberries if I put them in a smoothie. Thank you for sharing all your ideas though, I really appreciate it!

Yes, texture is my problem too...it's hard to explain to those who don't understand it! I like potatoes, pasta, bread....etc but can't eat those anymore. I'm stuck eating mostly meat and it's not always something I enjoy lol. You?

Eat one spoonful at a time until your taste buds learn to like some things. And never overcook veggies. The best is steamed and al dente.

@MommyOfEli2013 Legumes are fine for diabetics. Add some mashed corn, a bit of green beans cut in squares and diced gourd.

You should be taking a good multivitamin to help with any vitamin/mineral deficiencies that you may have due to your limited diet. I'm a big believer that adults should eat vegetables. We aren't kids. Try them in new ways--steamed or roasted. I don't love steamed broccoli or cauliflower but I will gobble it up if it is roasted with some extra virgin olive oil. Green Giant even makes broccoli and cauliflower tots (like tater tots) that you bake and that are really pretty good. Roasted baby carrots, baby spinach sauteed with some garlic and olive oil, meatballs and sauce over zucchini noodles. . . you just have to keep trying new ways to have them. In the meantime, green smoothies are a good way to try to get some veggies into your life.

@MommyOfEli2013 Roasting is my favorite way to eat a lot of stuff now--broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and even carrots and parsnips. (potatoes obviously too but they aren't low-carb) You can even roast green beans and asparagus. I think eating vegetables is one of those things you just have to keep working at doing. I still don't love them all but I eat them each day because I know it is one of those things I'm supposed to do. Some I like more than others but I try to eat a variety of them because I know it is good for me.

@NJChicaa I have thought of roasting them, just never really knew how. And potatoes I could eat any way, but unfortunately I can't have them anymore. That's great that you eat them even though you don't love them all. I wish eating them wasn't a problem for me. For now though, at least until I can find some I can eat, I will get back to my smoothies.

Well I do take vitamins. I understand that everyone should eat vegetables,I just never have been able to, and I have tried different ways (except for roasting).I guess I could give that a try some time, but if the texture is not right I won't be able to do it. Thanks for the tips, it's just tough to get past!

I'd trade for that problem right now(I know not eating enough can be a problem too though). I eat too much of the unhealthy stuff.

I like veggies. But I don't like fruit (although I like fruit juice). I don't like the texture of fruits. One way I get the nutrients that I need is by taking a multi-vitamin pill once per day.

I am diabetic but gladly, I am not a picky eater. I eat almost all sorts of fruits and vegetables. Maybe, try experimenting with your vegetables to make a delicious dish/viand that you can eat.

That's great that you're not picky, it is so much easier to get healthy when you don't have to worry about that. I have tried experimenting a lot over the years....and I think the only way I can do it is by making smoothies. Thanks for the advice though!
