Calling knowledgeable people - probably older in years

When my mother died, I ended up with a lot of her bits and pieces including this ‘thing’. Does anyone know what it is or what it if for? It is like a giant set of tweezers and I think it might be to stretch the fingers of gloves perhaps although it doesn’t seem strong enough to do much stretching. The top section in the photo is a holder for the item itself. Perhaps someone has seen something similar in a museum somewhere.

Yes, indeed. It's a glove stretcher, as @pgntwo and @FourWalls have said. From the days when women wore tightly fitting gloves made of kidskin. Gloves these days tend to be looser fitting and are worn for warmth rather than for fashion or hygiene purposes, so you'd hardly ever need to use glove stretchers these days! These look as though they are made of plastic, with a plastic case, so I imagine that they are not very old - probably from the '40s or '50s (OMG! That IS considered old these days! I must be an antique already!)

@JudyEv I wondered about that, too. It looks as though it's the spring that does the stretching, doesn't it. Also, I think that the ends seem to be thinner than the rest of the shaft, almost as if they are meant to be used for stretching something like a rubber band rather than gloves. Makes me wonder whether they are, perhaps, a tool for helping one put on/take off a rubber ring to tie the ends of braids/plaits or something like that. There also appear to be two pivots or pins going through at the joint. That is also slightly puzzling to me!

Probably the right sort of plastic for generating a good static charge, by the looks of it .

Going through comments I see your guess is right. All what I can say is that your mother was stylish, modern and up to date

I doubt my mother had any kid gloves. I think these would have been handed down perhaps.

When I first looked I thought they were spring-loaded chopsticks! It appears that you're correct, though, they're glove stretchers.

I see that others already gave the correct reply to your question, this is a glove stretcher, mom had one, but it was made in wood. She also had stretcher hangers, I remember she washed the light colored gloves with a special soap.

@JudyEv Surely those made in wood were built in a way to apply more force.

Maybe the spring has weakened as it doesn't seem strong enough to stretch anything.

@LadyDuck They certainly look stronger. This one opens only 6mm which doesn't seem enough to stretch anything. Maybe the spring is weak but it still can't open wider than 6mm.

I think they are for stretching the fingers of kid gloves after they've been watched - whoops - make that 'washed'. Well before your time, and slightly before mine, women regularly wore gloves made of goatskin and the gloves would shrink a little when washed.

While it seems to be for stretching gloves there is something not quite right with that decision. It is quite weak although that could be because the spring has weakened and it only opens 6mm which doesn't seem enough for stretching gloves.
