Monday Blahs

It's cool, cloudy, humid and blah this morning here in eastern NC. This is an improvement on how I felt when I woke up yesterday. At school this week, our first quarter ends on Wednesday. Most of my kids have good to excellent grades for the quarter. Today will be spent working on writing for the most part. I brought home the classes first drafts of their research papers and only made it through about 5 of them yesterday. The handwriting was so atrocious that I spent as much time deciphering as I did actually reading for content. We will definitely be spending more time on penmanship. I hope everyone has a good Monday. Is that an oxymoron? How is your day shaping up so far?

We are in festive mood and fun. I enjoyed dancing with friends and family in Dandiya night and now my feet hurts. Children are no more interested in writing with pen in this typing era. I had so many atrocious handwriting Children coming to me in my handwriting improvement class.

In our middle school almost all but the math teacher require that assignments be typed because they've grown tired of the poor handwriting.

@arunima25 I wholeheartedly agree. There are many benefits to learning to write other than people being able to read what you've written.

@DWDavis Typing is okay. But as an educator I feel that writing with hand is an important developmental milestone. It definitely works on lots of other skills and it a true developmental need of children from 7 to 14.

It will be a busy Monday. I really should put away the iPad and get myself into gear. The sun is shining....oh what a joy! We've had more than two weeks of gray skies and rain...now 2 days of sunshine!!

That`s great. You`re lucky to have smart kids. Nothing much today here only sunny and a little bit cold feeling type of weather.

My students are very smart and I work hard to keep them engaged and motivated. That's one reason I emphasized the importance of good handwriting to them today. Your handwriting, or at least the attention and care you show when handwriting, says a lot about you.

So good to hear from you. Did the storm affect you over there on the Atlantic side much?

The rest of the day went well after the students got down to work rewriting their drafts neatly enough for me to read them.

My writing is terrible. After so many years of being out of school and not writing often my hands hurt after just a minute of writing and no matter how hard I try to make it look tidy I can't.

Some of my students were complaining about their hands aching after I made them rewrite their papers neatly enough for me to be able to read them.

I'm ready for it to be Friday already and that's unusual for me these days. It could be because my missus and I are going on what will probably be our last camping trip this year this coming weekend.

So far so good, about to go into work, second shift. I will say I do have nice hand writing, both print and cursive.

My handwriting has always been terrible. If they'd have had such things back in my day, I probably would have wound up in OT to try and improve my ability to write in cursive.

Indeed, it is. The kids still need it though. Learning cursive has been shown to have many other benefits to fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
