Seriously, who owns the sidewalk

I worry that people have forgotten that sidewalks are for walking. They are the "side" walking area of a street. No sidewalk, no walkers! Scooters, bikes, Segways, all need to properly use the sidewalk. No should "behind you" as they pass walkers. But to wait until the walker is actually past! Geeze

I guess the clue is in the word itself sidewalk . Do bicycles not generally use the road in the US? If you cycled on the footpath (as we call it here; again the clue is in the word!) here, it wouldn't be long before you got stopped by a cop.

In the UK it is increasingly becoming common for walkers and cyclists to share the same tracks officially. This is particularly so in cities, where extra wide tracks are marked out to allow this. It does mean that walkers and cyclists are honour bound to look out for each other, and generally they do.

Actually most bikers use the “side” walks in the US. Not always true, there are places where there are bike paths. But overall it is more hit (and hopefully miss) on the sidewalks.

@indexer If everyone behaves considerately there would be no problem.

Or "pavement" as we say in the UK! My complaint is their use by road vehicles for parking - two wheels on the road and two on the pavement. This is often done so that is impossible for a walker to use the pavement and they have to step out into the road. Even if it is possible for a walker to get past, anyone with a pushchair or in a wheelchair often cannot. Sometimes I knock the offending vehicle's wing mirror - accidentally on purpose!

Awesome! Glad to see you here! I would never (accidentally) knock into the side mirror. I have however accidentally walked into the car and set off the alarm :-)

@NormanDarlo I think he meant knock the mirror off.

In our city there are always motorized shopping cart drivers on the side walk. If I encounter one I will say excuse me and pass in front of them since I move faster anyway. It's dangerous for them to be using the sidewalk, but there really isn't any place for them and I guess that's the only way they have to get around. The cyclists here are normally good about sharing the road with the cars

You are very polite, I just glare at them as I pass.

Sidewalks should be for walkers only. It's not a skateboard track.

True - I completely forgot about skateboards. Nearly got hit by one last week!
