October 15th celebrates one of the greatest TV sitcoms on the small screen, "I Love Lucy." Starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley, the show made its debut in 1951. The TV Show was a pioneer in "live" performance, allowing fans to see the stars acting up close and personal in a studio created theatre...for free! The "I Love Lucy Show" ran for six seasons receiving 5 Emmy Awards. In addition, the program was the most watched in the United States during 4 of those seasons, finishing it's final season atop in the Nielsen's ratings. You can still find the sitcom reruns somewhere on your TV dial 50+ years later and Lucy's adventures are as funny today as back when they first aired. For those who have watched the show in re-runs were you a fan? If so, do some channel surfing and celebrate National "I Love Lucy" day by watching a marathon of episodes. I remember seeing Lucille Ball in some serious film roles on TCM. She really was a talent.

Lucille Ball was a wonderful actress. She knew how to make people laugh. However, I was never a fan. Comedy isn't something I willingly watch. I've seen the show many times and it always made me cringe.

@dgobucks226 I always envision the person getting caught doing something like that, and then it going badly for them. It's never funny for me but scary about the consequences. That's why I can't watch comedy. I think she was a wonderful actress and comedienne. I just couldn't watch it.

@just4him I understand and in many cases she got "busted."

We don't seem to be in agreement on this subject. There were some pretty funny episodes like the one were she was in the candy factory assembly line and could not keep up. She started eating the candies. That was great comedy to me and definitely relatable to someone working in that job. Real Charlie Chaplin expressive humor to me. But I know, certain comedy is not for everyone...

I wonder if any other TV shows have their very own 'day'.

@dgobucks226 Really? A jump over sharks? Wow, I wondered how they managed to achieve that footage.

@JudyEv After that episode their tv ratings started to drop off resulting in the show's eventual cancellation.

I don't know, but have you heard of the phrase "jump the shark" as it relates to TV series. Apparently when the Fonz in Happy Days did a jet ski jump over sharks in an episode the show lost it's appeal to viewers.

Hell, pretty much any modern day sitcom involving a couple with friends is in some way, shape or form based on I Love Lucy.

@dgobucks226 Too bad, but I had heard that Fred and Ethel actually didn't like each other in real life. Pity that

Fun fact: When the show run ended in 1957, they were going to do a spin-off with the Mertz's. Fred was all for it but not Ethel, she hated William Frawley.

Yes, extremely funny show. So many sitcoms have used The Lucy Show formula. The Honeymooners is another sitcom which did the same thing. It had Ralph usually getting in trouble just like Lucy. Plus, they also had neighbors in their show.
