Can Hollywood Outdo This Horror?

MyLot Exclusive #46 TAKE TWO If I were to tell you that there is a survey online right now that asks, "Are women the property of their husbands?" What do you think the results would be? I saw just that very same survey today at DEBATE.org (Link at the bottom) and before I scrolled down enough to see the current results, I figured that it would likely be bad but that the good side would be winning. I predicted it would be around 60% No to 40% Yes. Then I scrolled and I wish I hadn't. The results were (And still are at this moment as I write this), 56% Say Yes and 44% Say No. Now, the good news is that this is a completely unscientific study but does that make you feel much better about the state of the world? I'll skip all further self-evident commentary and ask a related question. Will Hollywood ever be able to outdo this real-life horror? Can Freddy, Jason, et al or even Satan Himself in a new Omen or Exorcist, ever be scarier than that? How about literature? Will the likes of Stephen King and Clive Barker ever top that? Maybe I'm in a just overly pessimistic mood right now but I say no. I will continue to enjoy the work of all of them but I don't think they will ever be scarier than real life.

What are the chances that the majority of those questioned are the husbands and wives filling in the forms in the presence of over-bearing husbands

@xander6464 yes, the question setters knew the results they hoped for and went to people more likely to want that too

@arthurchappell So maybe my prediction is closer to the truth. That's much better but still terrible.

That is very possible. And it's a little good news if true.

It seems to me that that is the rational answer. I just find it really disturbing that the overwhelming majority doesn't feel that way.

I'm surprised that so many women feel they are property. Or that men would consider women their property. You lost me when you started talking about Hollywood outdoing a real-life horror. I don't know what you refer to unless it's your first question. I don't watch horror films or read Stephen King because I like to sleep at night. I don't consider myself anyone's property, not when I was married, or after.

Yes, the real-life horror I'm referring to is the 56% who took that poll that feel that wives are property.

@just4him There seems to be way too much of that attitude.

@xander6464 Oh, okay. The sad thing is that men think they are too.

Seriously? Even now? That makes me not want to interact with society anymore. There's a video going around on Facebook - it's a guy talking about the Brett Kavanaugh thing - he tells a story of bailing out a woman at a bar who had some creep making unwanted passes at her - and his point is how that (some) men respect a woman's wishes to not be harassed if she is the (wife, sister, girlfriend, etc) of another man. That she is property. But not if it is simply her wish to not interact (or be touched, grabbed, harassed etc) . Sad.

Interacting with society has a lot of distasteful problems and this is one of the biggest. And just when we think there is some progress being made, something like that video always pops up to remind us that we're really getting nowhere fast. I don't even consider my cat and dogs property and we still have people think that women are slaves.

@xander6464 Oh yes, so true. I haven't been around dogs in a long time, but yeah - from personal experience - the cat is their own entity who allows me to be around lol.

Let's see now if I had been the property of my first husband I would have lost my mind ages ago and life would have stopped for me. Someone I am sure someone will take reality and put it into a movie. Just think a wife stamped as property, chained in the basement to a sadistic husband and so on and on

The Stepford Wives kind of did it but since the wives were robots, I don't think it really counts. But I'm sure someone will nail it some day.

Does the survey come from Afghanistan or something? Or are feminists saying "yes," meaning that we have a long way to go?

In many religions, men do believe that women are property.

Religion almost always plays a big part in it. Just look at Christianity. God created Eve as an afterthought and solely to be Adam's toy. That's no way to run a world and unfortunately, religion still runs most of it.
