We Won't Always Know Why

We all know that difficult things happen. Most of us have dealt with loss and perhaps even extreme tragedies. On a positive note, sometimes we receive unexpected blessings that we feel we don't deserve. My sweet mother-in-law is 94. She has been quite ill for a long time; almost completely bed-ridden for the last two years. In the past 6 months she's been saying that she's tired of fighting. She's ready to die. She had an emergency situation last Saturday. Long story short, paramedics worked on her. Then she had to be on a ventilator for four days, sedated. When she finally woke up and was able to talk, she asked me "Why didn't I die?" "I've lived long enough already!" A friend of mine recently lost her sister in a tragic car accident. The woman who died was only in her forties and had a lot to live for! Why? I decided a long time ago that some of life's questions have no logical or "fair" answers. It's better to allow myself to grieve, then eventually accept what has happened or is currently happening. Constantly struggling to understand the reasons is a common human response to tragedy. But doing that can torment the mind and soul! Acceptance brings more peace. What have been your experiences with these difficult life issues?

It's all a part of life, the good and the bad, but as humans, we always question. Acceptance does bring more peace than questions, as you so beautifully stated. I hope your mother-in-law finds peace when the time comes, as my father and mother did.

Thanks very much for sharing your wisdom @DianneN, and for your kind words. Yes, I suppose it is just human nature to ask "why".

We will never understand why such things happen.

I agree. In many cases we won't. Thanks for your comment @dya80dya.

Yes we have to face life and all its miseries head on. Sorry to hear of your MIL. But we must live each day like it is the last. Injustice is something I have a hard time with in life. I can handle what I have to deal with, but that does not mean I forgive those who cause misery. Still, we soldier on.

Thank you @Courage7. Yes, I don't always live every day like it's my last, but it's a great goal to have! Ah, injustice and forgiveness are difficult issues for most people I think, including me. That could be an entirely separate discussion.

My grandmother passed away last year. It was unexpected. It's a hard thing to accept but I know there's a reason why it happened. Life really is short. We should make the most out of it.

I agree with what you`re saying here. We really can`t tell when our life will end. Only the creator of heaven and earth knows about it. It`s much better to accept and enjoy the life to the fullest as long as we can.
