Movie Review The Villainess

Spoiler alerts - 2017 The Preston International movie festival came to an end tonight with this South Korean gang-spy drama. While the previous seven films addressed serious issues of identity, death, dealing with prejudice, etc, this was a shot of escapist fun, an ultra-violent blood bath on a spectacular scale. More bullets flew here than at the Battle Of Stalingrad. It's a revenge drama in the Kill Bill tradition. Sook-Hee decimates a gang she holds responsible for killing her father before being arrested and recruited to a government supported assassination squad. Spied on by a spy posing as a neighbour, Sook-Hee finds him genuinely falling in love with her while also finding that her first husband who she thought was dead, is not only alive, but responsible for all the attacks on her too. The stunt work and blood splatter is very well choreographed but it is all as ludicrous as a cartoon. A great no-brainer movie to end the festival with after so many serious art house movies. My thanks to Preston's Worldwise Learning Centre and Comensus who organized my free tickets for this brilliant festival this year. Youtube

I checked the trailer, there is too much violence in this movie. I watched Kill Bill, it was good, but some scenes were too gruesome. I will pass on this.

We do go to the movies to escape the humdrum routine of daily life. It's nice to watch an action movie once in a while.
