What would you do if you won an insane amount of money?

Seeing as the 1.6 Billion $ lotto just got won by some lucky person in South Carolina, I thought this would be an interesting discussion. I did buy a ticket for the drawing. Of course, I didn't win a thing. But I did let my mind go there for a minute. What would I do? Well, for starting I would pay off any and all debts. Then I would tend to fun/ immediate stuff. A new car or cars. Buy a home and a vacation home. Help mom and dad with expensive things and vacation home for them. Buy mom whatever she wants - a craft room, a theater room... buy dad his old sports car, first car he owned. Buy myself the fancy Coke machine that has a million flavors. I'm not even kidding. If I win a big amount of money I want one of those machines. But on a larger note. Buy Coke a Cola. The Company. Or if not Coke - buy something that will keep bringing money in. I don't know what that would be. People always need food, housing, and in most cases here, gas. People often splurge on going out to eat/drink, getting their hair done and going to the movie. Those are some ideas. Anyway find something that will keep bringing money in. Then - help friends out. Then - give away a big amount to an essay contest. Look for people in tight situations. Have them write about their situation and what they would do with $. Then - donate to a place that actually does research cancer cures. However noble my thoughts I would be worried that the money would change me. Like it changed the man in this story. If you read the article it tells the story of Jack Whittaker whose 314 Million Dollar Powerball win literally destroyed his life and turned him into a real jerk in the meantime. Though I would tend to say he probably always was that way. The money just brought it to the front. Photo: Pixabay
Within two years, Jack Wittaker was unwelcome at bars and his beloved granddaughter had disappeared.

I would buy my family a home so we would never be homeless again. I would buy a reliable Honda minivan so we wouldn't be without a vehicle ever again. Then, I would go to EVERY single motel I could find and buy the hungry families that live there food and hygiene products. I would also tell them about God's love. A few homeless families would have a house bought for them too. You see, we know very well what being homeless feels like and I want to change the world for the Lord. I don't want anyone homeless and I want people to know God loves them-no better way than showing them kindness!!

You have good, down to earth goals. I hope the big winner in South Carolina is as fair as you are. :-) True, kindness does tend to get people's attention. A good way to tell them of God's love too. Maybe something like a tiny house project or encampment? Then again tiny houses maybe wouldn't be good for families, families may require more room...

I agree with @myklj999 I'd not be comfortable with an insane amount of money as the cash would bring as many problems as it solved in my opinion. That being said if I did win my primary concern would be keeping it utterly secret. I may tell a couple of family members but that'd be it. I'd then start on a cover story for me being more wealthy that'd convince friends and colleagues. Then I'd buy a house, not a mansion (Ilike small places) just somewhere I like and that had a couple of decent size spare bedrooms. If I won a billion I'd start doing research into charities in my local area (within my 3 counties) and look to offload at least 750 million to good causes. I'd gradually build on the cover story to account for my increasing wealth and would leave work and buy a hotel of my own somewhere. Then I'd concentrate on making it an amazing place etc.

Ah hotel business appeals to you? That's cool. Why hotel? Maybe that's a thought. Own a hotel. It brings in money, and a person could live there too, in a suite or something. I tend to agree. I don't actually know what my "dream" house is. I like older places. And I wouldn't want the upkeep on a mansion - though I suppose someone could hire that done with that sort of money. Still though. I'd rather have 2 places at that rate.

Spend it--that's what money is for--Like Dolly Levi says, "Money is like manure--you have to spread it around!" I have been thinking of how I would spend my lottery winnings for over 40 years---but not $1.6 billion--and have a plan all laid out. As soon as I win you will see!

I had mentioned this on someone else`s post, I know it would not change me, I would buy several mylotters homes and donate an insane amount to St. Jude`s. Most of all I would give people houses. Start up another dream business that I am also trying to make come true. I would spend it like crazy, none of my family would ever want anymore.

True. I think money just brings forth what was already there as for the person's personality. Giving away houses is a good idea, I'm sure it would change a lot of lives. What kind of business?

Except for a few more perks I wouldn't do much different. I've lived at this level of poverty for so long I wouldn't no how to spend so much money. But seriously, I would donate to more charities and help my family a bit with bills. I mean how many millions does one really need to be satisfied????

Pay off debts in total first and foremost..which is minimal for sure. Buy several houses. That would be enough for self and family. Then yes cancer cures and battered women and children, homeless, jobless, and starving and the environment and so on. Those would be my charities. I remember that man and that story so sad. It is a good read thanks Faye.

I would go on a much needed vacation first ( this wouldn't even make a dent in the money), then I would sit down and figure out how many different people I could help. Next would be to make a small investment so that I could draw interest to keep helping others. I would donate to charities and organizations that truly help people.

The first thing I would do is buy a ladies oil wrestling team...I just love sports. Then one of those million flavor Coke machines. I really want one, plus they attract the right sort of people. All your ideas are great and more than doable...Except for buying Coke, it's currently valued at nearly 80 billion dollars, so you'd need to win 80 lotteries of this size and then convince the majority shareholders to sell to you---All in all, a big headache you don't need. But with that much money, you don't have to worry about business, even with very safe investments, you could assure yourself of millions a year in income without ever touching your principle for the rest of your life. You could buy your parents and yourself beautiful houses and then fill them with everything you want without any trouble at all and you could still do the same for a few other friends and family (Provided you don't go crazy, of course, like the guy in the story. And I think you're right about him. He probably was always a jerk. And not very bright on top of it. Say, you're making $3 million a year, you just stay in that budget). You could even play Oprah and give away 100 cars a year. If you did a My Favorite Things show, I would really like to see what you pick. I really like the cancer research idea. You could help places like that a lot.

@FayeHazel I need more details on the punishment and then I'll know whether to plead guilty or not guilty. People are often offered a reduced sentence for pleading guilty and I need to know if that's what I want. Yeah, I mean living off the interest but it wouldn't be that simple. You'd have so much money that you'd have more than bank accounts. Most of it would likely come from dividends. There are so many things you could do. The cancer research, scholarships, the groceries, etc...for those you could set up a trust or you could just do it yourself but the problem with that is that you would be flooded with so many frauds that it would be really hard to determine who really needs help. I think Oprah stopped doing that when she stopped doing her show. It does kind of suck. But when she did it, she picked a show and gave everyone who was in the audience for it a brand new car. She did the same thing with her Favorite Things shows. She brought in a bunch of her favorites, everything from waffle mix to stuff like stoves and refrigerators and TV's and gave one of everything to everyone in the audience. My favorite things can't include body parts? I'd like to negotiate that. Maybe it could be worked into the plea deal over the Oil Wrestling/Sports Motivation charge. Talk to the prosecutors and see what they say. By the way, I'm not getting any lawyers because I'm the Best Litigator Ever. And nothing ever went wrong for any defendant that decided to defend himself. ...I'm coming to your place. Probably morning noon and night ----This is a huge coincidence. Did I ever tell you that morning, noon and night are my favorite times of day? And don't worry about anything. I'll provide the ice cream. And the whipped cream. And chocolate syrup...It doesn't go with floats but we might find some use for it.

Oh yes, I am sure it is your pure love of sports that would motivate you on that. Remember there's punishment if it isn't because you love sports.... wait what? Oh that's my rule, right. Oh shoot! Who'd a thunk buying the majority shares of Coke would've cost that much? Oh well. Ah, live off the interest you mean? That's a pretty sweet deal. True, the more I think on that, I think money probably just brings out real personalities anyway. It was really unwise of him (in the article I linked) says he got arrogant, bragged about leaving , like 50,000 $ in his car and then surprise surprise he got broke into.... I would like to think it would make me nicer :-D But then I'm too nice anyway. OOo, that's a cool idea. When I wrote this I was thinking to give some lucky person a million here and there, but actually much smaller amounts to much more people could be a good way to do it , too. A fridge here, a month's worth of groceries there, a car, home repair.... could help a ton of people. How do I get on Orpah's car giveaway list? I'd like to see your favorite things too. Can't be body parts though. Oh yes, there needs to be a cancer cure. I'd like to find the foundations that are actually researching it Ps. if you get that Coke machine I'm coming to your place. Probably morning noon and night. Shall I bring my own ice cream for floats? lol

I agree with Jen, that i would first buy a home and car, then give food and things to the homeless, along with getting some of them a place to live whether be a house or just paying a years rent and bills at an apartment for them. But I would also stock up on house things to not have to worry about them for quite awhile, go to way more concerts, and MAYBE go on a trip or two. However, I don't play, because I know I wouldnt win if i did. So I don't even think about it much. I hate people who let money change them.i could never.

@FayeHazel Thanks.. It's definitely very slim for everyone in my family. They can win a little with scratch tickets, but not much of anything with everything else. lol I know a lot of people are.. but I also know there's people who let money get to their heads once they have it. I couldn't. money is just money, nothing to change your character over.

Having a lot of money can be good, but too many huge lotto winners have gotten murdered over the money. I would want to donate some to help the homeless for sure. I would want to take a trip to Venice, Italy and ride a gondola. But I would make out a will designating where the rest would go, so my greedy relatives would not get it.
