Give'em an inch...!

Two months ago my eldest child (14) spotted a puppy at a local adoption event. She fell in love with the cute little bugger and begged to adopt him. We talked about responsibilities and, in the end, hubby and I agreed to let her spend her hard earned dollars to get the puppy. Now, our older dog (3 years; spayed), Jay, has always been a submissive girl. Hubby is the Alpha and we taught the dog that all humans were above her in the "pack". I thought Jay would put the new pup, Tee, in his place but instead, she lets him walk all over her! When they get fed, Tee shoves her away from the food bowls. And Jay lets him! When we call Jay over to get some lovin', Tee shoves in and pushes her away. And she lets him! Jay has a special, old chair outside that she likes to sleep on. Tee has suddenly usurped Jay from her throne and taken over the spot! And she's let him! Tee is only 5 months old but he's almost as tall as Jay. They tussle together, play chase with each other, and Jay is teaching him to bark at strangers that pass by the fence (sigh). I can tell they'll be best buds...but she gave him an inch and now he's taken a mile! Funny how the pecking order works, huh?

It's fun to see pets grow. Maybe Jay knows Tee is only a puppy and will grow out of it someday. The family has grown and Jay has accepted Tee it seems.

He has definitely taken over her chair. I found her "sulking" outside last night while he sat like a King in the comfy chair. Poor Jay!

First of all, it's so good to see you here!! Second your Jay is so sweet and sounds just like my dog who is also very submissive.

Well, that's actually the new puppy. He's pretty big, though, huh? Jay is a Rottie mix. Tee is a Lab mix.

It is great to see your name appearing again. Welcome back. And I guess animals sort out their own pecking order regardless of how we might have done it.

Thanks for the welcome back! Yeah, I know dogs have a pack mentality but I honestly expected Jay to be the top dog. I'm hoping to get chickens next spring and I expect there'll be quite a pecking order!
