Root Canal Horrible

I had a root canal 40 years ago with no issues and that tooth is still great so when it was recently suggested to save another, I thought it would be no big deal. The procedure itself was painless and even the next morning I was fine. By 3pm the pain hit and my whole right side swelled. What was odd is the tooth that hurt wasn't the one worked on. By yesterday morning it was so horrendous nothing helped. The dentist said it's rare for this to happen. It's in my sinus and my smile is very lopsided like I'm still under novacain. I took a painpill last night and on high doses of amoxicillin. Finally, tonight the pain is barely there but the swelling still is. This was/is some scary stuff. I go back for my crown on the 8th. I'm anxious about it. Never again. I'll just yank it if that bad. I'm trying to keep my own teeth but after this round, dentures don't sound so bad.

@noni1959 To be so out of control like that would be deeply troubling.

@sallypup It's still in the sinus area and now to top it off, my son-in-law brought a cold home and I have it coming on full force. The tooth pain is gone now though.

The tooth in which I had a root canal in years ago is now gone. I don't care for dentists!

Usually I do fine except the drill noise is awful. This really upped my anxiety about them now.

@celticeagle I had a horrible experience as a child that carried over but in later years found awesome dentist that didn't hurt and the only issue has been hearing the drill. Now this happened and I'm anxious. I get the crown done Tuesday.

I had two root canals but nothing like this ever happened. Is the dentist sure he cleaned and removed there is nothing wrong?

@noni1959 My mother-in-law always told me that first decision must not be changed. I hope you will feel well soon.

@LadyDuck She's right. The first instinct and decision should be the one.

They did the xrays and nothing is showing except the sinus cavity got infected somehow. They said it will go away on it's own with the antibiotics. I did research and a number of things could have happened. I wish I went with my gut feeling and just pulled it.

Only had two root canals done. The second one exploded after a couple of years, but the first, about 20 years old, is still going strong. Hope the crown sorts it out, worked very well for me

I sure feel for you. I had a lot of teeth pulled this summer. I need to get a partial.

I have three missing molars from over the years and my teeth are shifting from it so I was going to do implants. Not anymore. I'm opting for the bridge now.

I have never had a root canal, and I hope I never need to have one. They sound horrible.

Normally they are not that bad. Just expensive. I've had a couple almost 40 years ago and thought with technology, this would be easy. I'm told it's rare to have what happened to me.

I'm sorry you had such an experience with your latest root canal. I had one a couple years ago and my results were satisfactory. I hope your swelling goes away soon and you have no further complications.

Thank you. Me too. All but the sinus area is back to normal. A part of me wants to just yank it before the crown gets put on but I came this far and I'm putting that dang thing on.
