Empathy and Compassion

I have had a fulfilling journey but have no idea what the future holds for me and therein is the beauty of life. I tend to reflect often on my life and the experiences I went through. The most fulfilling among them was when I rose to help others in need and the personal sacrifices I had to make. Certain happenings keep playing back, and it is only human some hurts are etched in our memory and tough to erase; maybe, they are meant to act as a constant reminder. Then some are pleasant to recall and lend ourselves to feel proud for rising to the occasion, going beyond the call of duty. I don’t like to be taken advantage of but then I don’t want to miss an opportunity either to be of help in some way. The more the sacrifices called upon to do my part, the more is the fulfillment therefrom. It can be anything from mere advice sought. I put myself in their shoes to help those in need. We need not only love and compassion but also time. Nowadays, I encounter more the “I am busy” types and, sadly, they do not know what they miss in terms of human empathy. We hear about Artificial Intelligence and Digital World, but they cannot replace human interactions. Will they have the empathy factor even if a there is a program built in? I think some suppress these basic human traits and then life will ring hollow - siva

The hardest thing in life is finding a path! The line that you wrote (but also time) resonated with me. For years I chased success and it laughed at me. Then I came to realized success was my own happiness.

Thanks, happiness is from within though we keep looking for it from pursuing more and more material possessions. We are led to believe they are assets but, in fact, end up as liabilities - siva

The "I am busy" types have no place in my life when it comes to empathy, compassion, and being a human being.

I am meeting more of those who have no time to listen. That is worrying as we are still human though robots and Artificial Intelligence can coexist with us - siva

Even other species have them and even live by them, so we at the apex of all species should be more aware of them and live by the basics to survive. Our going overboard will impact all others too and that would be big let down - siva

Compassion and empathy allow us to fit into another persons shoes
What are empathy and compassion, and how do they relate to love? I would say that empathy is understanding, and compassion is love in action. Love, as it exists in God, only comes to life in God's creation when they link the God-given love within themselves to the outerness of compassion which links through empathy, which is more of the mind, as much as compassion is more of the heart. Love is in part a feeling drawn out from the heart, but in the mind, it is more a decision to choose it, love, through trying to understand another, by your walking a mile in their shoes with them. @Shiva49 Thanks Shiva. Yes, as soon as we create borders, or put up barriers, we restrict the free-flowing of love between people.

@innertalks Yes Steve, barriers are our creation. We came as human and leave likewise - siva

Nicely stated Steve, thanks. We have our own challenges to face and surmount, but with love, compassion, and empathy, the world will be close to the heaven that we look for hereafter. Selfishness, ego, and one-upmanship are spoiling the unity of humanity. We tend to be selective when it comes to the basics that we should live by sans borders - siva

Those two are really important and I know that both of them are necessary to be called a well being citizen. :)

Yes, they underline humanity and what our role is and why we are here. I feel they are sparks from our creator to guide us along - siva

You are right in this area. We are often thinking of ourselves as being "too busy" to sacrifice even a tiny bit of time to listen and to care and to help. I hope there will always be people who have empathy and compassion for others.

Even when I was busy working, I always lent a listening ear and put myself in other's shoes. We should be human in our interactions. I will never forget the few who went out of the way to help me in times of need - siva

That is indeed a pity. We all should have time to pause and ponder, help those in need, for a fulfilling life - siva
