Glad I Saw 'Em. It's a musical series about musicians that I was lucky enough to see in concert, because they are now deceased, and I ain't gonna see them again. We are at #7: Lou Reed (1942-2013.) Talk about an epic day! I saw Lou Reed as headliner at the 1989 Werchter Festival in Werchter, Belgium, a day that included a lineup of Texas, Pixies, Tanita Tikaram, The Robert Cray Band, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., and Joe Jackson. Reed was touring in support of his 1989 album, New York (A damn good record, by the way,) so his setlist naturally included a lot of that material, yet the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer didn't disappoint when it came to playing his classic material. From his days as frontman for the Velvet Underground to his decades-long solo career, Reed let the favorites fly. "White Light/White Heat," "Sweet Jane," "Heroin," "Vicious," "I Love You Suzanne," and, of course, "Walk on the Wild Side" were just a few of the tunes that held my focus during an "I can't believe I'm seeing this" evening. Check out that lineup again. Quite a few of those acts rank among my favorites. I cannot, however, imagine anyone other than Lou Reed headlining that day. It was, well, it was just right.
