Many in mylot are speaking of Halloween. It must be a great day (or is it night?) of celebration. However for people in India and other eastern countries, Halloween is a totally a "foreign thing". Christians in India do celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day but of Halloween we only read in sites like myLot. I believe every feast has a meaning and significance or a story behind it. Could anyone tell us why Halloween is celebrated. And how pumpkin finds such an honored place at Halloween.

Do you think its originas also predate Christian thought? Pumpkins are a sign of the harvest. It seems like it would be a way for kids to take part in "Pagan" harvest celebrations. Some Christians think it's too "diabolical." Snap, I'd better do some research.

@m_audrey6788 If they have fun, I'm OK with it. I do know that some really little kids get scared when they see their parents in costumes, though.

The celebration kind of evolved from 609 A.D. to 1000 A.D. Pope Gregory III instituted All Saints Day on Nov. 1. October 31 was known as All Hallows Eve. This celebration was in honor of church saints that had passed on. The Celts had always celebrated Samhaim. The church, in an effort, to minister to the celts combined the celebrations and it became Halloween. The holiday transformed again once American colonist from Maryland and the southern colonies combined Halloween with native american traditions. This is just a very abridged explanation. The pumpkin observances was handed down from Irish and Celtic traditions. The Irish carved faces in turnips to keep and evil spirit called Stingy Jack away. The Celts believed that spirits could walk the earth during the certain nights of the winter solstice. They, too, carved faces and placed a candle in turnips to ward off evil spirits. It was in the 19th C in America, that pumpkins were carved as decorations for Halloween. It is a super fun tradition.
