About that constitutional birthright citizenship: Wrong again

Eugene, Oregon
October 30, 2018 6:31pm CST
The President of the US says that we are the only country that grants automatic citizenship to children born here. Once again, he is ignorant or chooses to ignore the facts. Thirty countries around the world do the same thing. He thinks that an executive order can change any part of the United States Constitution? Wrong again. The Constitution can be amended and it is long drawn out process. No one power hungry person can do it alone. And I am so glad!

Our Constitution will survive this "bump" in the road of democracy. It's unfortunate that we have to experience this, but at least it shows (so far) that our Constitution can stand up to whatever is thrown at it.

I hope so, Jeff, but this is the scariest time of my life for democracy. So many parallels to the rise of the Third Reich.

@playertwo Robert Woodward's book, "Fear" points that out.

@moffittjc I admire your confidence, Jeff and hope that you are right, but no president in my lifetime has sown so much division as this idiot has. A Demo House of Reps could do much to stop his worse instincts, such as amending the Constitution by executive order.

We have one such in our country who takes decisions without even consulting the parliament.

@JamesHxstatic Opposition does its job but that has no effect as the ruling party has the absolute majority. Hopefully this should change in the general elections which is slated for early 2019.

You are correct, many countries around the world grant the "ius soli", the right of citizenship to those born in the country, the correct number of countries with unrestricted ius soli is 35. Many other countries have conditions (at least one parents born in the country, or a minimum of years the parents stayed in the country). He knows nothing.

Trump knows he can't do it. He is saying it just to try to fire up his deranged cult members against immigrants. That's what they live for. It is another stunt. . . just like his failed "tax cut for the middle class" that no one believed. Kellyanne Conway's husband joined with a liberal pundit to write an opinion piece flat-out stating that Trump can't revoke birthright citizenship today. Interestingly, Kellyanne also removed "counselor to the president" as her description on her Twitter profile today. People are wondering if she quit, was fired, or if she is just laying low (as if we would forget who she is or what she has done).
Despite what the president says or wishes, the words of the 14th Amendment have meaning that cannot be wished away.

I assumed he was wrong and had not done any research and just spoke off the top of his head as usual. He should let experts tell him what to say so he does not look foolish.

@lovinangelsinstead21 So glad that the Democratic party has won control of the House of Reps as of yesterday. That will save a lot of problems for us.

And how many stories have there not been about babies born while flying over a country who then says they are the babies homeland. When the US was still considered a top country which unfortunately has diminished for some due to Trump my godfather's son who was born and raised in the US flew his wife over from Riga, Latvia where the family lives when she gave birth to his children just so they could be US citizens.

Have not heard of a lot of those stories. I know that wealthier people do sometimes come here to give birth so their children can have citizenship in the US.

President Trump reminds me of President Lex Luthor in the cartoon movie "Superman and Batman: Public Enemies" which Lex passed a law that all super heroes had to do his bidding.

technically, the constitution gives him "executive order" rights when a president feels theres a need to. the constituion also says you can only be a citizen if born in the country, american soil, to american(s). or if your born to an american(s) parent on foreign soil. 14th amendment. this is interesting though, because, if he does executive order the birth right issue. no doubt it will go to the supreme court and they will be making a ruling, if they choose to hear the case, as to what constitutes birth right citizenship.

It does say that anyone born in this country (not just to American citizens) is a citizen automatically for life. He cannot and no president can alter the constitution with an executive order.
