The Prime Minister of India unveiled the World’s biggest statue of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel in the state of Gujrat near Vadodara. This 182 meters statue standing on a base of 58 meters has been named as ‘Statue of Unity’ as this most prominent leader of the ‘Indian Independence Movement’ has played a major role in keeping the India Intact after the Independence. This statue is situated on river island facing the Narmada Dam which is also Known as Sardar Sarovar Dam near Rajpipla a place 100 kilometers away from the city of Vadodara. This Statue undoubtedly will be a big tourist attraction and I am sure will attract many foreign tourists!

I agree with @xFiacre, money spent in statues could be better spent to make life better for many poor people... make hospital or even toilets to avoid the diseases to spread.

I agree with you, the idea behind this stautue was conceived by present Prime Minister many years back when he was just Chief Minister of Gujarat state. His idea was to involve the people into this project and people have co operated him too. The link will all the details about the venture! Link:
The foundation-laying ceremony, on October 31, 2013, kick-started then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 Lok Sabha campaign. And its completion and inauguration, exactly 5 years later on October 31, is being seen as the beginning of Modi’s campai

In fact he is having many Hospitals, roads, streets with his name. But unfortunately because of the politics of the nation he didn't get the importance that he desired in the common people. This is one attempt to remember this great persom. please go through the links I have provided above to understand the idea behind creating this Statue!

@vandana7 , The point is that today they are getting connected that is what I appreciate I am least bothered who is doing and how it is being done! We need to perceive the things in a positive way! Every one can criticize anybody for no reason as that is the easiest thing to do. My boss always says to me not to come to him with a problem on the farm, he tells me to come with a solution for the problem before discussing about it! That indeed is very difficult task to do! That is different issue that I always do that! And I expect the same from the people who always talk about the problems and start criticizing the Politicians. Yes, I agree most of them are corrupt and selfish...if all of them are bullshit, then who will govern the country? Today things are getting better and it will take time to get the system clean as the people involved in running the syatem have to change their attitude and the nature! Which can't be expected to happen over night!

@AKRao24 He is getting more criticism. If more hospitals would have been built, or rivers would have been linked, he would have been at least remembered. Remember Indira Gandhi Canal? Ironically, it is Chandrababu Naidu who has started linking rivers in Andhra Pradesh.

Looks like it takes a statue to unite a country. Nice! And tourists visiting will bring more unity. How exciting. Brilliant marketing by the government is what will help this statue unite the country at this much needed hour.

@AKRao24 yes. We need to look at both sides of the coin. Sometimes we need to also look through the coin and see the truth behind any act. I'm optimistic but also realistic. It has created the publicity needed and a stage to showcase the government. So we have a winner!

I failed to understand your satire dear friend! Every thing has two sides like a coin. I am an optimistic person seeing brighter side of life , without getting influenced by external forces. Now coming to your response...This statue won't create a unity in the Country. This is symbol of the Unity that was created by this man immediately after the independence by uniting 562 princely states. The details you can have from the link given below. The aim is not to get tourists, but it is obviously understood and tourism will not only grow the economy but also glorifies the history of the Nation. What ever you may say, this was very well planned and implimented project where people co operated and extended their help with open hearts. Link:

He was a great Indian freedom fighter and was first Deputy Prime Minister of Independent India. He was responsible for keeping the country united after the independence . In fact four Royal provinces in India were to get associated with Pakistan after the Independence, his timely action action prevented this and today the India is united! You can read about him in details through this link dear friend! Link:

@AKRao24 The healing wounds scratched again to bleed...makes you wonder what some of them are plotting. Of course, the richer ones will plot, and the poorer ones will execute. I think Lala Lajpat Rai deserved a statue on his name. It is not easy to take a stick beating on head and die without protesting. Merely because he did not survive does not make him less important.

Even if it attract even half of the tourists that Taj Mahal (the most famous and most revenue generating tourist attractions India), it will take over 150 plus years to get back all the money spent on it. Had the money been spent on universities in the name of Sardar Patel, how many Patels we would have generated?

The tourism idea is not included in Government's agenda! That is what I felt about it! Now my idea is to appreciate the marvel created in India by indigenous geniuses. I think such things are must for the countries to have their recon in the Global arena. There are many areas where spending looks like wastage, like spending money on sports and games, but every country is spending a lot of money to get reckoning in International arena!

I hate the statue culture, and you know it. I would rather have spent it on linking rivers. There are many leaders in our country and new ones will keep emerging. There are many gods too. Are we going to keep on spending monies like this? I was against NTR doing it, today nobody looks at those statues. They become poop facilities for the birds. Cleaning such things is also hazardous for people. I think this is appeasement tactic for Patel community. Another reason is art cannot be valued exactly. Its value differs from person to person. So it leaves auditors unable to exactly determine how much was the right value for it. It leaves room for siphoning away monies in form of kickbacks. I am not ok with that either. Cement prices go up because of the demand, steel prices go up because of the demand, sand, gravel...ordinary people are not able to build their homes, but these statue culture advocates are busy with such things. I did not even mention the pollution for making and transporting that cement steel etc. I don't think tourism is going to pick up in anyway not today not 150 years from hence because of that statue or even Ram's statue. Within the country perhaps people would travel to see Ram's statue. But outsiders are not likely to come to our country to see Ram's statue simply because they hardly know Ram, and are hardly interested in him. They also do not find our country safe to travel to nor clean enough. I agree tourism is low investment high returns industry. But if laws relating rapes, and gangrapes and kidnapping and stealing are not made stringent, tourists would go to alternate countries like Sri Lanka, or even Bhutan or Nepal. And statues make people compete. Now they want Netaji's and then will come Jhansi Ki Rani, and then Bhagath Singh. That is endless thing. Nobody can be refused. Ideal thing would have been link rivers. Name the part that runs through some region by name of the great person from that region. What sort of Ram rajya is it where many are hungry, jobless, being trafficked and homeless? I am sure taxpayer's monies should not be used for that. In fact, what was not in the election manifesto, should not have been taken up. So definitely it gets a thumbs down. Much as I respect Vallabh Bhai Patel, I would never visit that statue, even if Narendra Modi gave me free traveling facility with 7 star hotel and other facilities.

The person whose statue was made was a Deputy Prime Minister of India immediately after the independence. Even after the independence there were 4 pricely independent provinces which wanted to merge with Pakistan. That would have been big set back for the country. This person was instrumental in uniting all the provinces with India, thus uniting the India into one country. That is why this statue of his is known as Statue of Unity. This is built in honor of that great leader and freedom fighter. The statue is the biggest statue in the World and it is worth seeing!

Undoubtedly this is having International significance and World is paying attention to this indigenous marvel created by local artisans. Regarding criticizing part, that will always there for any good project as some people always derive pleasure by criticizing the thing. Criticizing and advising is the most easiest thing in the World and som people want to make themselves geniuses by getting into these actions for everything that is coimg up for the progress of country. People who don't know what is an 'Election Manifesto', aspire to become PM of the country! That is the story of the country!

@allknowing , There are many things which are not required, still many countries they do it like trying to launch satellites in space, on Mars etc are some examples. These things are must for the countries to maintain their image in the World. Every country is having its own problems. For that they have planned budget and them only such projects are undertaken. Regarding demonetization, it is unnecessarily given a hype by media to sell themselves. Np body for that matter knows about the black money retrieved because of that. Everybody id doing their own guesswork. It is childish statement to make that friends were informed and given a chance to convert the black money into Wealth, Jewellery etc. Don't they require any registration and documentation for that? The culprits can be traced from the date of registration and also from the source of income what they have shown in the transaction. After the demonetization so far i have never encountered with a counterfeit note, which was very common before that. Needless to say that the people using fake currency for the activities of terrorism have practically become handicapped today. Yes, for last 70 years the people of the country were never allowed to progress. They were never helped to help themselves. They were just provided the basic needs to live and to lag behind in the society. Today with the awareness of fundamental rights these oppressed people have become smart and they are demanding for their rights, that is why there is unrest. There are undoubtedly many people who were freedom fighters, but there were very few who were interested in keeping the country united, which was totally a new concept then.Vallabh Bhai Patel was very instrumental in accomplishing this job and he deserves this honor. Rafale deal is not unfair, it has been done in the interest if Nation. It is not like having a Kg of Sugar from a grocery store. There are set rules, clauses when two countries they enter a deal. Things are done following certain protocols. It has become habit of he opposition to shout at anything that is done for the good of the nation, just to establish their presence, which is on the verge of vanishing. The hugs and embraces has made today India's presence prominat on Global platform and the World is looking at India as one of the super powers in future! One has to be positive and there is no point in ranting about the hunger and poverty every time as this thing is present every where in the World and countries are trying their level best to solve it! But that diesn't mean that we shouldn't spend on the things that makes a countries' image prominent globally!

That depends how we perceive a thing. There have been many Nations come up with such statues , so this is nothing new. Nation has gone to dogs...what is so new about it! Don't expect a miracle to happen within a span of 5 years in the country which was exploited by making poor man poorer and depriving them from their basic rights of living. They were suppressed and kept illiterate for the gain of politcal parties. At least today people have understood their basic and fundamental rights and that is why there is unrest among them. The dirty games by Politicians for their vested interests spoiling the country. Sardar Patel in his speech on July 5, 1947, said - 'Our mutual quarrels, mutual animosity in front of our enemies is the big reason behind our defeat.' That is very true and this is not to be repeated again. regarding Squandering - We have many festivals in India. Let us take this current festival of Diwali. Despite of suffering from poverty and having many constraint factors people they celebrate Diwali, this is not squandering, but that is the need of the hour. They know very well that they are suffering and will have to fight against it, but that doesn't deter them from celebrating the festival in the name of squandering! This after all depends how we look at a certain thing and perceive it!

@AKRao24 There is nothing to perceive this any other way. This was not necessary. It has been explained how this money could have been usefully spent otherwise. And I am sure the dignitary himself would have wanted it spent that way,. Every move of this government is a disaster. Look at demonetisation. So many deaths but that does not seem to affect them. Ostensibly they claim to have had benefits but in reality no black money has been retrieved. That was taken care of before it was announced. All his friends were given prior information so that they could stack their money in property, jewellery and elsewhere, Saying that nothing was done in the last 70 years is proof enough how this government tries to put down others. Where is Mahatma Gandhi. Why not his statue. Where are other people who contributed? This government is interfering with autonomous bodies which again is a disaster. And last but not the least the PM takes decisions even without consulting the Parliament. Rafale is a good example. I can go on and on What we see is only form but no substance. See those hugs and embraces with foreign dignitaries but in reality we have a lot to worry about our neighbours. And this does not mean other governments are innocent but nothing compared to this hypocritic government.

@AKRao24 Tall structures included World Trade Centers. And the Malaysian twin towers. This statue does not cross those. Unlike those buildings which serve dual purpose of housing offices and yet attracting tourists, this one is only good if at all for tourism. Why would the world be interested in it now that they have seen taller constructions? Second thing, if you think of a tall person like Gulliver, and small humans, you would realize that people can only see the lower parts of the man, not his face. It also divides the nation because it revives resentment in the hearts of those who lost their privy purses that British promised at the time of granting independence. Likewise, annexation of Hyderabad has also not gone down too well. It is only rekindling those fires and fumes. It was quite forgotten here you know. Building up tall structures is not our technology either. We can't be learning their technology and then claiming we did it. We actually need help to link rivers, to and fro. India is staring at acute water issues in 10 years from now. And the best way to avoid crop loss either by drought or by floods is to do that.
