Go to the doctor

I think one of the most annoying things when talking about any ailment, booboo, or just a silly cough is when people tell you to go to the doctor. I went to the doctor a lot as a kid, I was a klutz and sprained my ankles, I have torn a ligaments and tendons in my knee, and also my weight problems. Like those are reasons you go to the doctor especially when you are a kid. But why on earth do people tell others to go to the doctor just because they had their first migraine in 5 years and it has only been a day? Yeah if that has been going on for 3-5 days with no signs of improvement, please go to the doctor. But just some head pain for a day and you don't give it a chance to heal you are wasting time. Unless you have a problem that is consistent, so bad you cannot function normally, or spouting out blood or bodily fluids you didn't know you had you don't need the doctor. Going to the doctor for a stubbed toe is preventing that doctor from seeing someone who could have a way worse problem and has to be in that waiting room suffering just because you had to go in for a booboo that you could have just put some ice on! Instead of telling someone who KNOWS their body way better than you to go to the doctor, perhaps practice your bedside manner. Suggest things like ice, orange juice, soup, most importantly rest. Or just wish them well, make them feel better and don't jump into worse case scenario. I am sure I have made this rant before, but I just had to do is again because it is just one of those human things that really grinds my gears. Perhaps I need a doctor for that.

Yeah, I don't typically go to the doctor unless it's persistent, such as the lingering cough I get every few years, or when my back pain last year wouldn't go away. I'll offer the advice to go if it seems serious or persistent, but they know their bodies better than I do.

@DesirousDreamer Right. I mean, it's okay to suggest it in my opinion, just don't push it on them unless you think it's absolutely serious. And listen to what the other person is saying.

I feel like that is what we need to live by, they know their body better than we do!

I agree with you completely. I had the sciatica when I quit drinking coffee and had posted about it on Facebook. An older cousin told me to go to the hospital because that's not normal! I told him if I feel like I might die then I will go but that I am not really worried about it and that it'll go away. He said that's how people die from brain anurisms and things. My sister and her kids are always at the doctor and on antibiotics. It's a bit ridiculous I think. I have to go once a month for med refills but other then that my kids and I are rarely at the doctor's. I wait a few days before going to a doctor to see if it goes away on its own or if other symptoms develop. My sister takes her kids so fast that the doctors never find what is wrong with them the first day so then she winds up going back a few days later again and then the doctors see more signs and can give a diagnosis.

@DesirousDreamer I hate having to go to the doctor every month for a refill. I'm exposed to a lot of germs going in around sick people all the time. Thankfully I rarely get sick!

@shaggin Probably because you are exposed to so many germs so your body has built the immunity to them which is great!

I feel like people get more sick the more times they go to the doctor. Because 1. Who knows what they are picking up at the office. And 2. They are not letting their bodies fight whatever is going on so they get sick more often. We have antibodies for a reason, they fough off plagues! Let them work.

At least my doctor who deals with my mental issues is kind and understanding of my problems.

That is different. Though I do hate when people tell me to go to the doctor for my mental issues when I know it would only make me worse. I do end up a lot worse when I tell someone my problems, but I guess I just have a type of bipolar disorder that does that haha

I do agree but some people are freaked out if everything is not normal. By being a caregiver so long I know when its time to go and when I can try something else. I may get annoying to the sick person asking a million questions about their pain or problem but its better for me to know everything so I can treat it at home, or not. Now I would suggest anyone with the worst headache ever to go right away to the e.r. because that person could be having a stroke. I say know your body, can an over the counter pain reliever get rid of the pain? How about a bottle of cough syrup for a cough. Colds are common and there is no cure... like you said juice, chicken soup and bed rest. I agree, most aliments can be treated at home.

Of course, you would know a bit more than a random person because you understand medical stuff a little more. So I know if you saw someone whining for a week about pain you wouldn slap their tush in gear and tell them to go. I can't freak out when something is not normal because I have had problems since I was born haha so I know my pains, I know my woes, I know why they are there. When I do seek medical advice I would ask for it. I just know when I need the doctor and when I just need an extra nap.

Well they just care. After all, it’s you who will decide whether you go to the doctor or not. I dont mind people telling me that,

I have a lot of anxiety. When people tell me to go to the doctor it makes me think of the worst-case scenario, which isn't healthy at all.

@Janet357 I best thing to say is, never tell a person with anxiety to not be anxious. That is like telling a person with asthma to breathe better.

@DesirousDreamer oh, ok. But the only thing i can say is dont be anxious of things, sometimes what we fear of doesnt happen at all.
