Dhanteras is the beginning of 5 day Deepawali festival. It is the festival of lights. There was mythological story that prince Hima was given astrological saying that on throyodoshi, 13th day of Kartik he was going to die and Jamraj will kill him in the form of snake. His wife prayed before Goddess Laxmi and Kuber. They told her to wear gold, silver and other ornaments, get the entire house lit up with lights, give 14 diyas and not let her husband. The snake could not open the eyes due to sparkling light and Hima got a new life. From that time, Dhanteras is celebrated as first day of the festival by Hindus. Hindus buy ornaments or metals on the day.
