I Did My Civic Duty

Voting, politics

It's the first Tuesday in November and I have done my civic duty. I took my non-driving adult son to the polls. We occasionally discuss politics at home, but I don't try to pressure my kids into voting for the candidate that I think is most qualified. I do, however, encourage them to study the issues and vote according to their convictions and values. This country has become very polarized politically in recent years and it will be interesting to see which way the wind blows this time around. I must confess, though, that I am a bit skeptical about the veracity of the vote. It has been shown that hacking the system isn't as difficult as it should be and there seems to be minimal effort put forth to limit voting to those who are actually eligible. I'm not eligible to vote myself, but every time my driver's license comes up for renewal the bureaucracy not only attempts to register me to vote, they ask me to declare myself as either a Republican or a Democrat. And I have to explain that I am NOT legally eligible to vote. I could have voted today, but I followed MY conscience and abstained.

Good for you. Like I said, it would be illegal for me to vote, so I didn't.

If you are not elibible to vote, are you likely to get kicked out of the country? It seems you can't be too careful these days. And Australia has managed to deport several who have lived here all their lives and have no ties to their perceived 'mother country' but they've deported them anyway.

I'm here legally, I'm just not a citizen.

Why aren't you eligible to vote? I confess I just can't understand the American political system.

I am not an American citizen. I am here legally, but I haven't jumped through the citizenship hoops (and don't plan to since I object to part of the citizenship oath)

By those who abstain have no right to complain. I am delighted with the outcome, getting some control on the mad man in the Oval Office.

@JamesHxstatic did you miss the part where I stated that I am not eligible to vote? It would be illegal for me to participate in the election process.

Are you suggesting that I should have voted?

For many years I did not want to vote, but in recent years I have been voting regularly.
