Intrigue From India and To India: What's on your mind?

I don't know why I am into this, but I like to know the "feel" of the concern people. India considered being one of the poorest countries (no offense). Recently, India unveiled a statue of Sadar Vallabhbhai Patel. He is a political leader who helped the country to reclaim their independence from the British in 1947. It is claimed to be the tallest statue (597 feet) in the world now, two times the height of the Statue of Liberty (305 feet). The statue represents humility as it was dressed loosely and in sandals. However, the cost of this bronze statue was 403 million dollars. Now, many are hurting, and crying, this amount could have helped more starving people in India. In defense, this may be one of the tourists attractions in India so it means it may bring income, as well. Do you think Patel would want the government to spend 403 Million dollars for his statue? Imagine, how much rupees this 403M is when 1 $ = 72.61 Rupees. What is your take on this? Do you think this is OK?
The 600ft tall statue, which cost $430m, has been billed as a major tourist attraction.

I don't think Patel will agree about this statue when he thinks that his fellowmen are starving. That is a waste of money. But well, who am I to say that?

While I disagree with you that India is one of the poorest countries I too think it was a waste putting up that statue. One of the richest in the world lives here
Mukesh Ambani has now made a new headline, this time as the richest man in Asia, as per Bloomberg Index. Ambani has even outrun Jack Ma who is a founder of China’s largest e-commerce company Alibaba. The success and money that Ambani holds at the moment ca

I agree with you. This despot wants to go down in history by creating events that he would be remembered by. That Bullet train is another example.

@Mavic123456 Sardar Patel was one of the greatest leader our country has ever had.He United the country. But he was denied the respect he deserved. In my opinion, PM ModI has done a great job by honouring the Iron Man.

@allknowing What he would have wanted is a different question, but he did a great service for the nation and it's our duty to honour him. When he was alive,he did not want anything. He could have become the first prime minister of India, but sacrificed the honour when Gandhi wanted him to do so.Now it's our duty to honour him.

I do not really know about their economic stature but I think even though they are considered third world their economy is big enough to afford making statues as big as that one. Maybe the wealth is just not evenly distributed in the country that is why they are looked upon as third world but if you would see them they even boast having nuclear weapons and they have a large military to defend their country so I do not think they are really that poor.

@Mavic123456 As for me for as long as it represent some kind of national pride for them I guess that would be fine with them. I read the history of the character they used and it seem like he was a good leader back then and he held India intact during the times when it was dividing up. That is why the statue is called Unity. Anyway we are not affected by it economically so let's just respect their decision for building such monuments.

@rsa101 OH he was a good leader and yes the statue is Unity. ahhh I have no problem with what their decision was, I am just curious how other Indian members here feel about it. Of course I can't say it is right or wrong. I respect their decision. *whispers to you* that's why my title was "Intrigue". It is not just because we are not affected of a certain issue we just ignore it. Remember we are connected to one another. Read also what other Indians were saying about this concern. We will learn something about it.

That is in fact huge amount of money to spend. It could be symbolic to most of the people in India however, you are correct, the amount would indeed help more people financially.

Its not, like the face of Marcos in Baguio. Very few a huge statue become a good investment in tourism especially when all you can do is look up and can't go at the topmost of the bust. They should have spend 1/3 of it in statue and 2/3 for recreational services and resort.

One thing i know about Indians is that they are very frugal. I worked with them to a decision making level. I believe that hose at the helm of affairs in India would have good reasons if asked why they spent that big on a statue.

oh yeah I have some Indian friends too and co workers as well, so I know. they have also good reasons why they put this up, to honor the man. although it is really none of our business I would like to know the opinion of the Indians about this matter, if for them this is OK or not okay.
