Another extras gig and children and nosebleeds

I was gone most of yesterday, just got back at lunchtime today because I accepted a little extras job in Portland that was filmed last night (the third one in four weeks). It was a no lines thing, sitting at a cafe reading a paper as background. The action was in a booth at the rear of the cafe, where a "family" of five sat being filmed. I am not able to disclose the name of this feature film that is still being worked on, but it involves two adults and three kids, one boy and two girls, the youngest about ten. During a break in the action, this little girl suddenly ran to the front to get help with a sudden nosebleed. Her aunt, mother of another one of the kids, said it happens pretty often. Things were delayed almost an hour while they got that under control with ice and compresses. I felt sorry for the little girl, but then wondered how common these nosebleeds are? My daughter had some physical problems growing up, but nothing like nosebleeds. I wondered if others have heard about these happening and what could remedy that strange problem?

I had nosebleeds growing up and then they sort of went away. My Grandmother would put a piece of a brown paper bag inside my mouth, directly onto my upper gums, if that makes sense. It worked.

I told them that I had heard that a piece of aluminum foil used the same way would stop it.

@JamesHxstatic Never heard that but maybe the key is just using pressure.

@JamesHxstatic Lucky you. I think I only got scale twice in the years I did it in Vancouver, back in the early 90s. Most of the time it was just minimum wage, which at the time was $5. And there was always craft services, even if we didn't get "lunch" which was 6 hours after call time. Sometimes, it was only a 4 hour call, so no lunch.

Oh yes, they pay us. It is usually around a hundred dollars, depending on the time there and they feed us and pay overtime as well.

@BarBaraPrz Well, none of this work is union, but is about $12 an hour. Craft services is always a good thing.

I am not sure if what's wrong with the girl. I hope it is not a serious health condition.

Sometimes kids tend to rub their noses a lot, which can sometimes break tiny blood vessels in the nose causing a nose bleed. This is very common. Not sure if that was her issue though.

She may have a deviated septum. Of course some common causes of nosebleeds are such things as medications, leukemia, objects in the nose, picking at it, dry air and even chemicals irritants. I get them sometimes in the heat of summer when the air is extra dry.

That would be a real pain for a child in school.

Nosebleeds are common enough, but maybe not in every family. Happy for you that you have this part as an extra. It must be so much fun.

The son of one of our friend had this problem, I do not remember what they did to stop the nosebleeds.

@JamesHxstatic I remember that the poor boy time by time disappeared in the restroom when he had the problem.

It must be embarrassing for children and frightening as well.

I've heard of children that were prone to regular nosebleeds, but have no experience of it myself. So you are getting quite a few jobs in films?

Just background sorts of things, but it is the busy season in Portland I guess.

Oh sure, I have not had any problem getting paid on any of these things. It just delayed things.

I'm glad you're still finding acting jobs and enjoying it @JamesHxstatic. I feel bad for that little girl too! I don't know much about frequent nosebleeds. I've only experienced a couple of them in my life and my kids haven't had problems.

Hi Diana, it is a quiet time in filming right now, but spring will bring more opportunities. Yes, that nosebleed thing was odd.
