too early for turkey?

I found a really good price on a turkey recently, but didn't have the room yet in my freezer. Still, finding proteins for under $1 a pound is hard these days, so I stuck the turkey in a brining bag with some brine and let it thaw in the cooler for 48 hours or so. Today I'm cooking that turkey in the smoker. I'm trying to make it less "Thanksgiving flavored", so I had a lemon garlic brine and used a lemon garlic pepper rub on the surface. I had planned to make it yesterday, but I had an emergency that took up most of my morning and afternoon and didn't have time to smoke it then. It should be finished 4 hours from now. I haven't really decided what to serve on the side. I could probably have it with rice and a salad... that's certainly not what we'd have on Thanksgiving, so hopefully they won't burn out too quickly on the turkey. Do you roast a turkey any other time of the year besides a holiday? What do you do to make it different?

Nah. I don't think you are early. But it is surprising you can't find turkey for under a $1 a pound. I mean, well...THIS time of year. The stores usually offer them for about 29 cents to 50 cents per pound around this time so long as you buy $50-$75 worth of other groceries. That's usually when I buy them. As for smoking turkeys, this is my favorite way to eat them.

Oh, I often can't find them for much under $1 a pound during the year. All the good turkey sales will be cropping up soon.

@porwest I just bought a fridge for the garage over the weekend, so now I have room to do a little stocking up!

@spiderdust Oh yeah. No. During the rest of the year turkey is not a good price at all compared to other meats. Agreed. But yeah, this time of year you can get them for cheap and even stock up a bit if you have room in the freezer.

I usually try to have turkey on hand to serve anytime I'm feeding a crowd.

I like that idea too, although sometimes it's hard to find a big turkey in July!

@spiderdust I usually pick up two when they are inexpensive and keep them in my freezer. At the moment my freezer is quite full, but I can always rearrange.

I usually only roast a turkey on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. I just roast it in a roaster bag, according to the directions on the box, with sage dressing.

@spiderdust We started doing this about ten years ago and love the self-basting concept.

@porwest Ah, Schnuck's... I think I just figured out what region of the US you're in. I liked Schnuck's more than Dierbergs. Or at least I preferred their prices.

@spiderdust At Schnuck's right now they are 59 cents per pound. Debating whether I will get one to cook in the off season. I usually do, but they take up so much room in the freezer, even if I have more than one freezer.
