things that happen in the flatlands

November 12, 2018 12:59am CST
There is a whole stretch of road, between Here and There, which is closed for the next month. It's a road which is full of bends, much like a river. Which is what it once was, an exceedingly Long Time Ago, when the land was full of ancient people who probably travelled a lot by boat. And now you know the the reason for folk Beyond the Fens thinking that Fen folk have webbed feet. As a result of this vast flat area being below sea level, things sink. Especially roads. The road between Here and There is not just incredibly winding, it is also very dippy. And bouncy. Boing. Boing. They fix bits of it sporadically. Then it starts to fall apart again. They fix bits of it again. The circle continues, neverending, infinite ... By closing the road completely for a month {it's fine, there's only about seven houses along those six miles} they are hoping to strengthen the foundations so that the road doesn't need fixing for longer. Will it work? Probably not. And thus we get to the reason I wrote this post. Cars which would normally travel on that road are having to drive on this road, and there are some bluddy idiots around. If there is no fatal accident on this road - which incidentally, is built atop what used to be a railway line - in the next month, then I shall eat my hat.

More than one century ago they closed the rivers around Milan, my native city (the Navigli). They build roads on top of them and time by time a big portion of one of those roads collapses creating serious traffic problem. Now the great idea, let's remove the roads and use the Navigli as in the past. I am glad that I do not need to go to Milan anymore. I can imagine the mess.

@Poppylicious I only see problems if they re-open the Navigli, mosquitoes everywhere even in winter would not be the worst.

I would prefer to travel by water, I think. It would be serene and calming.

Not that I want you to get indigestion or lose a hat, but I hope there are no fatalities along your road. We have a similar problem with some of our roads here in eastern NC. Most prevalent are some of the stretches of road in the northeastern part of the state where the land is very swampy and, geologically speaking, was under the sea not so very long ago.

We have a lot of 'drains' here, created a couple of hundred years ago. They can be treacherous and people who go speedy-speedy often drown when their cars fall in. This used to be an area of islands in the winter months before these drains were created. Rumour has it that my house will be under water in another one hundred years. *sigh*

Impossible. Avoiding it can lead to twenty plus mile detours! Or worse, now that the other road is closed!

@arthurchappell Or, pretty darn tooting council for allowing it to happen all at the same time!

I'm told Hat Wellington can be quite tasty. Chapeau à la Bourguignon can be quite warming in these cooler, darker, wetter, and altogether slipperier winter months.

They both sound far too posh for the likes of me. I'll have my hat as it comes, with a splash of ketchup on the side.
