This time of year potatoes sprout in storage. The climate gets cooler and that results in potatoes and other tubers sprouting on their own. in storage. The conditions where I live are not conducive to planting these sprouted potatoes. For me it is just a nice photo to be stored in my digital folder. This potato along with a few others have been used to make a delicious dish.

Since you can't eat the sprouted potatoes any more. Perhaps you can plant them and you will have more potatoes later

@allknowing Really? I was told that the sprouted potatoes are poisonous. We never eat them.

You are the second one who says a sprouted potato cannot be eaten. This is a routine here and we always skin the potatoes and cook them.

You can grow them in a trash can filled with soil - so I've heard.

@DianneN I think it has more to do with the climate. It prefers a cool climate.

@allknowing Sorry. I guess it may be your soil or your climate. I know you are successful with fruit trees and flowers.

I just cut those sprouts off and if the potato is not squishy I cook it and eat it. I tend to forget about the potatoes so they sprout often. I forgot about the potatoes once again so tonight I am making potatoes and eggs for dinner before they go bad.

We do the same as a sprouted potato is good enough for eating

But you could have a try. Just to see what will happen, what if, if they grow?

One year when my sons were young we planted a potato that had started to sprout and the next spring we dug about a pound of potatoes from it. The boys were very proud to eat potato from their own 'garden.' Once was enough for them, though, and we did not try it again.

I want to try that this time. A pound of potatoes was certainly a bumper crop

I have planted potatoes using eyes like these before. It's like a small miracle to see the new plants grow from such a small piece of potato.
