What do you feel about dental checkups?

How often do you visit your dentist? I'm talking here about regular visits for checkups, as opposed to having to make a visit because of a particular problem like raging toothache. The normal practice in the UK is for a dental practice to make an appointment for a checkup six months after a course of treatment ends, or after a previous "all clear" checkup. Some dentists are good about issuing reminders closer to the date, but with others it is up to the patient to remember - or not to lose their appointment card! I always have the problem of not knowing what I'm going to be doing in six months' time, so agreeing a date that far ahead is a matter of hoping for the best! Is every six months too frequent - or not frequent enough?

eek, as little as possible
This is a clip from the movie. Steve Martin is hillarious. I create these for my iPod for when I need a good laugh.

This arrangement is just right. I've asked the receptionist to call me some days before the date is due because I might forget it if I were not reminded. She does it and I'm grateful for that.

Yes - that is a good plan. The dental practice I use is a large one, and maybe slightly lacking the personal touch in that regard!

@indexer The practice I go to is also a large one. Three dentists work there together. Yet, the personal touch is there. You could talk to the receptionist of your practice. Maybe she is open to suggestions. Better call a patient before an appointment than wait for them in vain because they forgot the date.

Every six months is a necessary evil.

@indexer The longer I leave it the less I’m likely to get round to going.

And then presumably you eventually have no choice? I did that, and ended up with massive amounts of work that needed doing including two extractions and three crowns!

@xFiacre Yes, there were a few of those! I now have everything sorted, and my last appointment was only to have a lost filling replaced - in and out of the surgery in only 15 minutes, and not even an injection needed!

Since insurance covers every six months, then I'm good with that . If insurance allowed it (which I'm sure it doesn't), I would go more often if that were possible - what's an hour of time to get those teeth cleaned and checked. But I know - it's too hard to schedule that far ahead . . . I usually do it right before my kids school ends (sometime in late May or early June) - and towards the end of the year in between holidays (I have an appointment after Thanksgiving in fact) and the time is usually when the kids are school.
