Open mouth, insert Yule sock

Hubby and I are busy buying a bathroom in the house that we'll move to in a few years. (Include an antique claww foot tub in that statement, please.) This means that Christmas morning festivities could be lean. Last night a Yule light bulb went on in my too busy brain: hubby and I could exchange affirmations about each other instead of spending wads of credit cards on not needed gifties. I suggested this to him. He thought about it and said it sounded okay. Then he started in on little jokes. I said that there must be a limit to the amount of Christmas fortune cookies cause hey, he could come up with say 15 and I'd have 5 and feel stupid. We agreed on five each. I also said that when we wrote one we'd put the paper into the drawer of my Grandma table. Done and disappeared until Christmas morning. One only huge Do NOT do: not butt sandwiches, like "I Love your nose but you could sure stand to lose 50 pounds." And if possible, just like poetry, don't just say "you're cute!" but put in a sentence or so about WHY and HOW you are cute. Its past time for me to go hug my journals! There must be some hidden gems in there that I've forgotten. Wish me luck.

This is a great idea. We've given up on buying stuff for each other that we don't really need. We're more likely to treat ourselves in some way.

@JudyEv Now that I am pretty sure we are moving in about three years, I look at 'stuff' and evaluate whether its worth paying to move it. Do I need that little item or don't I? Can I get another one once I am over there- and that new town has way too many second hand and antique shops so probably what I have is not as unique as I think.

That is so cute how you both had to agree to do the same amount so neither would feel like they weren't loved enough if they couldn't come up with as many things to say. My brother in law and his girlfriend are buying my daughter and electric guitar for her birthday it isn't cheap and I feel guilty about them buying it since we rarely ever exchange gifts over the years. Last year she got my kids and I gifts and I had no idea she was going to and I felt really bad we didn't get them anything. I barely know her and my brother in law has had so many girlfriend over the years and getting gifts for them all and their kids really outs a dent in my bank account. I'm trying to think of some neat low cost gift ideas for them this year.

@shaggin My pet peeve about Yule: feeling obligated to give and give in a lavish way. Its built in but it hurts more than helps. How to show love without harming ourselves the giver??

@sallypup I budget my kids gifts to not spend more then $150 each. She traded in two guitars and then spent $70 out of pocket for my daughters guitar. I can't afford to spend that amount on every person even my boyfriend the max I spend is $50.
