As many of you know, my husband and I have been supporting Democrat Katie Porter in her attempt to unseat our Republican US Representative for Congress, Mimi Walters. Our extremely conservative California district has NEVER been represented by a Democrat. On election night, it appeared that Katie Porter had lost, since she was behind Mimi Walters by 6000 votes. One week later, however, the tide has turned as they count the last minute ballots, and Katie is now ahead of Mimi by approximately 250 votes. Because last minutes ballots tend to skew towards the Democrats rather than the Republicans, it is expected that Katie Porter's lead will only increase from this point. After spending the last year supporting Katie, donating to her, making phone calls, putting labels on mailers, driving door-to-door canvassers to various neighborhoods and appearing in her television ads, it looks like it is finally going to pay off! My husband and I are thrilled! It has taken a week after election day, while they have continued to count votes, but it has been worth it!

I so hope after the votes are finalized that she is the winner. It will be a feather in your caps and in those of the Democratic Party!!!

@DianneN - Katie Porter's numbers keep getting better and better. As of last night, she was ahead by 3800 votes and that number is expected to continue to grow. Katie is actually in Washington DC right now for the new member orientation. I'm sure the snow was a big surprise! I was relieved that I returned home just before the bad weather started. I love visiting my daughter, but I am also happy to be home!

@DianneN - I can understand why you are ready to head to Florida. This is very early for so much snow, isn't it?

@DeborahDiane That is awesome news! . Our son stopped by when there was an inch of snow on the ground. He left when there was two inches. I had him text me when he got home, and he said the roads were quite slippery. I'm looking forward to getting out of Dodge.

@LadyDuck - California goes out of its way to make sure everyone has the chance to vote and, after the election, they make sure people have a chance to correct any problems with their ballot. As a result, it takes a while to finish the count. They have a month after the election to come up with a final number.

Yes, we worked hard for over a year, so it is a relief to think that she is now likely to win! We are so excited!

I am so happy to hear that the Democrats won so much in California, especially in Orange County!

@DeborahDiane Oh yes, as an adult, I could barely stand living there in the 1960s. I was even questioned about a copy of Ramparts Magazine I had in my desk.

@JamesHxstatic - I'm afraid I have a few friends here who are furious about how the election turned out. I know they are in shock. However, I'm glad I worked to help this happen. Sometimes, you just have to do what you think is right, and pretending that our current administration is "normal" just was not right. Honestly, I think most of the shift can be blamed on the election of Trump. If the Republicans had chosen a moderate or traditional Republican to represent their party, then I think Orange County would still be Red.

@JamesHxstatic - To be honest, even though I worked for a year, along with many others, to change our representative in Orange County, I was shocked that we so thoroughly flipped the entire county from Red to Blue. They call the OC the "cradle of conservatism" because both Nixon and Reagan were from this area and the entire country has almost always been Republican. Our district has NEVER had a Democratic representative. I was thrilled by this election!

That's different that it's been so long before knowing the outcome. I don't know either person so I can't comment on them, but I'm sure it's nice when all the work you put in paid off.

@MarshaMusselman - It is a relief to know she is going to win, after we worked on her campaign for more than a year. After so long, you start to feel a real vested interest in who wins, and it was disappointing on election night to think she had lost. It is a relief to see things turn around.
