Brussels sprouts anyone? And, why is it easier to clean someone else's space?

I never had brussels sprouts until about thirty years ago. I'm the only one that eats them so I usually buy the frozen ones. Sometimes with cheese other times with butter only. These are in butter but I sprinkled some of my shredded cheese on top. I also found some riced cauliflower in the freezer and would like to try Mac and cheese with some. Anyone know how much cheese I should out on, or maybe just enough to taste? I spent some time cleaning the extra bedroom which my husband's claimed four years ago. I have lots of filling in that room and hope to clear some of that out too. If I can get rid of that then he may not notice how much of his junk I worked through. I made sure to not throw anything important out. His stuff was somewhat easy. Mine will take longer for I need to look at each paper to see how old it is. If it's old enough it's going right in the shred pile, but I'll probably have more to file away than I want. We need to move some furniture around and I'm not sure what room it will work best in that's why I'm starting with that room.

I love fresh Brussel sprouts. I roast them with garlic and honey. There are so many combos to try.

Roasting is always in the oven, right? That would take longer plus I really never know whether I'm doing it right.

@MarshaMusselman Yes, but you can steam them, fry them, boil them, etc. It's only a veggie.

I have never acquired a taste for Brussel sprouts and so don't eat them, as far as cleaning, I wish you well. I don't dare clear out anything of my husbands, his mess is up to him to go through and he hates doing it. I keep hoping he will start being a little more organized and he won't have to do it often

I won't let him touch mine but mine is mostly things for our business that I needed to check before deciding what pile to our them into. He's waiting for a bookcase he bought to go into that room. I may keep it in the living room and move my desk in there instead, but we'll see. Most it's his junk it's enjoy food and Kleenex boxes that I've flattened and out into recyclable. I also found four keyboard and boxes. One keyboard still looking fairly good and better than mine. V if I find out what he did with the USB connector when I can use it. I'm hoping it's still in his computer but we'll see. I'm saving him plenty to clean up. He probably won't but may change if I move in there with him. I'm now trying to start going through my mess in there.

@cintol he's either not noticed that I went through all his trash or he's happy I'm cleaning my section since he really wants that bookshelf in there. It's needed cleaning for years now as do other areas. My husband's not at tech he just doesn't bother throwing his boxes away

@MarshaMusselman Mine has 2 bookshelves in his office and has filled those with his collectibles and other junk. Hes got mini cars in there on top of his mini refrigerator and lots of other stuff collecting dust. He has asked me to dust in there but I told him I am afraid of breaking something so I won't do it. lol My husband is a computer tech so we have lots of that crap in there, actually the whole closet is full of it. Would he like having you in his area, mine doesn't, he says its his man space!! Bawhaha Well I hope your plan works and he cleans it up a little with you in there, good luck.

I also roast my Brussel sprouts, it releases the sugar and the taste is so much better.

@MarshaMusselman Yes they really carmelize when you roast them.

@BelleStarr at what temp and for how long do they get roasted. Do they get covered or in an open pan is fine? I may have ' roasted' foods before without knowing since I don't know how that's different than just baking the foods.

Hmm, sugar in brussel sprouts?, hmm. I understand because I prefer sweet potatoes with butter salt and pepper for the same reason where my husband must put brown sugar in them

@MarshaMusselman I do not like bacon Marsha, so it's surely not for me. May be she already knew, some other users spelled it correctly.

@LadyDuck maybe. I couldn't check my package as my husband's replaced the garbage bag already.

So, you've not had them since either? Maybe the recipe Heather founds would be one way to try them again. With bacon and Maple syrup in guessing. And she spelled it correctly. I'm guessing she saw your comment about that.

The first couple of times I visited the USA many years ago we were shocked at the lack of vegetables on restaurant menus apart of course from Sweetcorn so it is great to see so many more on the menu these days. Most children hate sprouts it is something that you grow into. I used to buy sprouts at Christmas until I was told I was the only person who eats them. It is a traditional thing to have sprouts at Christmas. My grand daughter used to eat off my plate and chose a sprout to eat. She put it in her mouth and her face crumpled like she was about to die. it was hilarious. Needles to say she learnt a lesson that day and it stopped her eating from my plate. Talking about sprouts you should watch the Vicar of Dibley a christmas edition about sprouts. It is hilarious she has already eaten three christmas dinners then did this challeng!

@MarshaMusselman I do hope so as it is quite funny but you have to understand British humour to get it. I was under the impression that the Vicar of Dibley was quite a hit in the USA at one point?

@garymarsh6 vinegar I might try can't see it with butter though. Is the butter just so it doesn't burn? I have yet to cook them fresh.

@MarshaMusselman A lot of times I just boil them in a little bit of butter. But I DO like to sautee them as well in bacon. Probably takes away from some of the health benefits, but they are damn good.

@porwest I don't believe bacon is that bad for us if we stay away from other things enough like sugar. Maybe I'll try them in bacon sometime, someone else mentioned roasting them with bacon and I think garlic. Do you steam or boil them before you saute them with the bacon? Otherwise, I'd think they'd be a bit hard.

That does sound good but I like to try to stay away from sugaring my foods if at all possible. But it might be a way to introduce them to my extended family. Anna commented that no one here swelled it correctly. I'm guessing you saw her response??

As my mother never made brussel sprouts, I didn't have them until my adult life. Our favorite recipe comes from Martha Stewart - brussel sprouts with balsamic vinegar glazed red onions - quite tasty! Right now we are clearing out my mother in law's house as she is being moved into a senior home. It's not easy in that it's all her memories - so it's heartbreaking for her - at the same time it is easier to remove things as we are detached from the "stuff" (still heartbreaking to see her heartbroken).

@MarshaMusselman My MIL has alzheimers running in her family, but knock on wood she has kept very active that it never kicked in (she is just naturally a bit forgetful ). But the problem here is she is still mostly independent - she is very aware that things are being "taken" from her . I'm doing the same thing as I thought of that too about my kids - getting rid of my own stuff so they won't one day have to. While donating my MIL's things, I've added some of my donation items to the pile too.

@MarshaMusselman I wonder why nobody got the name of "Brussels sprouts" right, they get the name from the city of Brussels in Belgium, so it's with a final S.

We did that for my mom years ago but even though we had her there she was already in the beginning stages of dementia and doesn't realize what we were up to. We divvied a lot of it up and stored a lot in her basement as my daughter rented the house for a couple years later we had to return and get the rest out. Because of that I've been trying to get rid of more things that we don't use it need long before necessary so my kids won't have as much to sift through.

Sounds like we are engaged in some similar projects. My husband wants me to clear out the Templeton house so we can rent it to someone. There is a 25-year accumulation of stuff there, so this won't be fun. I also have to decide which furniture I want to keep here and what here I can get rid of. It all makes my head spin.

@MarshaMusselman That would take some planning! It's a long way to come. The hardest part for me is the paperwork and making the decision to get rid of my seller's permit. If I don't have the seller's permit anymore, the inventory at home I bought with my resale number becomes mine and I'd have to pay all the sales tax on it unless I can show that I gave it away to a non-profit organization sold it. All that proof has to be written down book by book. For thousands of titles, along with the price I paid for them. Putting it in the right boxes and carting it away is a small part of the whole process.

I could come help you and you can come hello me. If you hey me there I'd work for free, lol. Like I said it's easier to work on the accumulation of others than our own. Just put on some good, lively music that you enjoy. It's easier if you have a large trash bag or container handy and some large boxes labeled differently. I had a bag for recyclables, trash and soda bottles which we take back to the stores here. Later I had a shred bag, trash and keep to use it file away. Each time I do this I hope the last one gets whittled down a lot.

@bagarad I understand. I can't file away this years papers just yet because in behind reconciling my bank statements for the business. I'm trying to catch up may. The majority of it is already in the computer but I pay one place I get for supplies and even when I try to put the invoices in a logical place I can never find them again. I did find out they not but not the one purchased in the spring. I'll probably have to email them for duplicates which I have to do a lot of years.

Brussels sprouts are really good with a dab of Dijon mustard. I'm not normally a mustard fan, but this combination is so delicious.

i'm a big fan of Brussels Sprouts! I liked them even when young. I like them plain, just boiled soft. No butter, just salt and pepper. But I also like to roast them. They are sweeter that way but it takes longer. I discovered adding them to a pot roast is the BEST! They absorb the beef flavor and it's yummy!

Maybe I'll try that next time I do a roast, Jeanne Marie. Do you still do that in the oven it a crock pot? I'm guessing however long the roast gets cooked, cooks the sprouts enough too?
