The island of love.

Where else but Cyprus. I have just returned from a short break in Cyprus which is a five hour flight away from the UK. It is in the Eastern Mediterranean. The island is divided in two halves one predominantly Greek and the second half Turkey. In 1974 10,000 Greek troops were deployed in Cyprus shortly followed by 6,000 Turkish troops and three days later by another 30,000 Turkish troops invading Cyprus causing a short war. The Turkish government forced thousands of Turks to resettle in the Northern half of the country. Many Greeks and Turks who had at one time lived in harmony with each other were suddenly thrust into an unwanted situation. Many were displaced and eventually the island divided. We took a bus one day to visit the Capital city of Nicosia which is roughly in the centre of the island. It is the only divided city in the world. We walked along Ledra street showing our passports at the border then walked a few yards through the buffer zone into the Turkish sector and showed our passports again. Prior to 2003 there was a dividing wall separating the north from the south this was demolished and now allows people to cross in either direction. We were now in Turkish controlled northern Cyprus. The buildings and streets are dilapidated run down and the roads and pathways are in a dreadful state. It is a complete contrast to the more affluent Greek Half of the city. There were several mosques nearby. We did not feel comfortable there so we about turned and returned to the Greek side going through the two passport posts but in reverse. We also took a trip to the beautiful port of Kyrenia. Driving through the small mountain range through little villages down to the port where we walked around the harbour area and had lunch in a roof top restaurant overlooking the bustling port. The north of the island is green and lush whereas the south is more arid and dry however it is a beautiful island which has much history. Think Aphrodite who is said to have risen through the foam just off Paphos in the west of the island, the Greek God of Love, pleasure, beauty and procreation and you have the island of Cyprus. The photo is of the cathedral St Nicholas which was built in the 1200's now known as the Lala Mustafa Pasha mosque in the Northern Cyprus seaport of Famagusta.

I have never been to Cyprus, I am sure it's an interesting place to visit, sad that the Island is split between two countries.

The Greeks started it Anna although they try to make out it was Turkey's fault. There are faults on both sides though many people lost their properties so Greeks took over Turkish property and Turks took over Greek properties. Hopefully they will continue to live peacefully!

Nice to know about the history of countries. As long as there is peace, we can enjoy such lovely places. In fact, the whole planet is inviting but we make it difficult for ourselves and fellow travelers - siva

@garymarsh6 How I wish countries made it easier for genuine tourists to visit them! After all, these borders were created by us where none existed and I include our beliefs too in them to highlight differences though we are one and the same. Unity in diversity is the only way forward. Love and compassion should be practiced but sadly distrust carries the day. 99% pay the penalty for the vindictiveness of the 1% - siva

There is so much more Changuangzhibin it is a beautiful island I wish there was not the division. Actually most people seem to get on with each other thankfully but it can at times be tense.

My husband and I visited Cyprus several years ago, too. We liked it there. The people were friendly and the fact that you can talk English to many locals is also good. When you are on a Greek island, it's a bit difficult to get into contact with anyone. We hired a taxi for a whole day and told the taxi driver to take us around. We found that better than hiring a car. We didn't have to concentrate on the traffic and we learnt a lot from him about the island. Our hotel was in Larnaka. Where were you based?

We stayed near Larnaca in a really beautiful hotel. My daughter sent me a message to say Daddy needs to treat his daughter and grandchildren a stay there. My answer to her.........shame it is an adult only hotel! (it wasn't although we were staying in the adult only section but being economical with the truth.

I find it intriguing how you can feel 'uncomfortable' in an area. I felt this in Hermannsburg in the Northern Territory. It was most unsettling and I couldn't wait to get out of the place. Very unnerving.

It just seemed everyone was looking at you. We just felt uncomfortable and yet when we drove up to Famagusta and on to Kyrenia it could not have been nicer. It just did not feel right.

Not a surprise the Turkey side is run down and they would probably love to take over the Greek half.
