My Dryer Decided to Stop Working

I really hate it when my dryer decides to stop working when I have a huge load of wet clothes to dry. I am not sure exactly how old my dryer is, probably about 10 years old. Last winter my grandson replaced the heater while I was in Florida. Lately I had trouble getting it to start. It is the sensor in the door which tells the dryer it is closed. With an extra push I was able to get it to work. Tuesday it stopped working, no amount of pressure helped. I put a notice out on Facebook to see if any friends had a used dryer I could buy. I can afford to buy a new one but I really don't want a high tech dryer, I want knobs and simplicity. My son in law lost his father in May and it occurred to me that he might have a dryer at his house which my son in law now owns. Sure enough he does, I would have had it sooner but a snow storm got in the way. Yesterday it arrived at my house. It is almost identical to mine, a Whirlpool with all the same setting etc. I think his may be a little older than mine but he was just one person and I suspect it has seen a lot less action than mine. I plan to keep mine, I think my grandsons can probably fix it and then I can use them to get parts for each other. The price, zero, zip, nada. Now that is the kind of spending I enjoy!! I love my son-in-law!!

Glad that all worked out. This has been our year for things to quit. I rarely use my dryer, so likely wouldn't replace ours if it quit. But only 3 burners on our stove work. We are dragging our heals at replacing that. Replaced our riding lawn mower with a used one. Had to buy a new (to us) car Wonder what will fall apart next!

I am worried abut my kitchen appliances, they are all 22 years old. On borrowed time already.

It was great good fortune you thought about this dryer. You can't get better than free. If someone pays you to take something you probably don't want it but free is good!

Exactly and I know his father never overworked it.

It's a good thing that you fastly found a replacement. Besides, that drier of yours already served you 10 years already. I guess, it is worth more than how much you have bought it. I hope that replacement will not soon say bye bye since you said it is as nearly as old as your old one that was replaced.

It is older actually but has had a lot less use so I think I have a while yet.

I'm glad it all worked out so well for you. When our son and his wife were living with us, our machines had the ultimate workout. We decided to buy a new washer and dryer, both high tech, and are thrilled with the energy savings.

I don't like high tech in appliances, just more things to go wrong and these new ones seem to have a much shorted life than the older types.

I'm all about saving money and it is so much like mine that it feels like the same dryer, which I also like.

I bought a machine a week ago, because the old one broke down and could not be repaired.

I wish you good luck with it, my experience is that these days the new appliances are just not made as well as the older ones.

@BelleStarr You are right, today is a technique of a poorer quality than before.

I am glad you had a replacement for free. I hope my washer and dryer will work for some more years, I bought them together 20 years ago. I already changed the oven and the refrigerator in the kitchen, but they were really old, around 30 years old, they were already in the kitchen when we bought the house.

Washer and dryers seem to need replacement more often than kitchen appliances at least here. My kitchen appliances are 22 years old but this is the second set of washer and dryer that I have had in the same time period.

@BelleStarr I replaced my washer only once when we lived in Monte-Carlo, we lived there 30 years, so it was not too bad. I think that both my washer and dryer are German, I cannot complain.

Nice that you found a used one so simply. I'd go with used too if our breaks down. While I wouldn't mind s new one they sooner last long enough for the price. Mine is over twenty years old as that's almost how long ago we be m bought this home and it was pulled when we got here too. But things back then we're made to last.

In the province, we don’t have a dryer. We hang our clothes outside and let the sun do all the work. Your son-in-law is your knight in drying armor. :)

@BelleStarr Me too and what is getting bad is many of the newer neighborhoods with homeowner associations will not allow clothes lines as they say that distracts from the so call beauty of the neighborhood which is why I am glad I don't live in one of those because if I want to dry nature's way no one can tell me nay.

The replacement one works great so I will let the grandsons take their time this winter trying to fix the other one. It is a great solution.

That's my kind of prefered replacement option too! I was shocked to find how expensive these items are; we needed a new washing machine recently and good ones are around £900! I usually look around for second hand things, the first one I had only cost £15 and lasted about 7 years! Next one cost £50 but only lasted 2 or 3 years so I had to look for another a few months ago, but I reckoned that even if I paid £50 again and it only lasted a year, I could still get another every year for the next 18 years before I had spent as much as a new one!

I agree and the new ones are made not to last, the older ones are much more durable. I feel like I won the lottery lol
