They are letting me down gently!

I am about to retire soon from my part-time job as a librarian at De Montfort University - I did my last-but-three session there yesterday evening. They are being very nice to me and not giving me any awkward jobs to do, so I am able to spend my time doing what I have always liked doing best, which is helping students with their information problems. Yesterday there was quite a long enquiry about tracking down an online journal article - we found that we could only supply an abstract, not the full text - and I was able to give some guidance on how to reference sources in an assignment. Apart from that, and the usual "where's the ladies/gents?", I had plenty of time to interact with MyLot! Just three more 4-hour sessions to go, which is 12 hours or 720 minutes - it doesn't sound much when you get down to counting the minutes!

You will surely miss doing those works at the library when you retire. Or you will miss your officemate if you are all close to each other.

@indexer Of course you should be given that. You have been their loyal employee for years so they should give that to yiu too as a reward.

@SIMPLYD Anyone with at least 10 years working experience is entitled to apply - so I probably will!

Of course I'll miss them - although I was only there for one evening a week. However, I'm hoping to get a "staff alumnus ticket" which means that I'll still be able to use the library whenever I want to.

You are a great librarian, we students always need such help but we don't always get librarians who are ready to guide us in the library.

That is interesting - that's what the librarians are there for!

You seem like a friendly librarian. Most of the librarians I have interacted with seem like robots. No offense meant.. just sharing my experience.

You would have to define what you mean by "librarian". Most of the staff you will see on a library issue desk are not professional librarians who have had at least one year of postgraduate training. I agree - some library assistants can be a bit robotic, but not many that I have worked with, and I don't know any like that where I work!
