You're Weird

Well, YOU may not be, but I think there is something weird or unusual about everyone. I break out into hives when I take a shower. I have changed soaps, I have put a filter on the shower head, and have seen a doctor to determine that it's not my medication. I STILL break out head to toe after a shower. The itching doesn't go away until I take a Benadryl. This started about seven years ago, and I see no signs of it stopping. What about you?

That really is strange. Does it happen if you take a bath in the tub? There's definitely something you're reacting to.

Yes, a bath does the same thing. Everywhere that water touches breaks out.

Ok, I admit I'm weird . Oh - how about baths? If it's not the soaps or the water - maybe it's the way the showering water hits/rubs your skin?

Baths do it too. I read a story about a girl who became allergic to water. She can drink it, but if it touches her skin she breaks out. She was seven when it started. So now, she takes two, five minute showers a week in cold water. She follows that with Benadryl.

@much2say Yeah. She tried swimming in a pool and swimming in a fresh water lake...both broke her out.

@AmbiePam Oh my gosh - I guess that would mean swimming is out too!

I've read that hives can come from hot water. The heat can release histamines. Perhaps that's why the Benadryl helps.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation.

@AmbiePam Perhaps you can try to lessen the hot water each time you shower and see if it makes any difference. My new DIL gets purple patches all over her body if the water is too hot. They do go away by themselves in about 10 minutes.

People look at me strange because I'm allergic to chicken.

Surely there must be something in the water that affects you. I have a friend who is allergic to the cold. I wonder if it is possible to be allergic to water. But I guess you can drink it without problems.

I do not know if I understood correctly-are you allergic to water?

If I had to guess I would say yes, but I have not been diagnosed with an allergy to water. I have so many health problems that my doctors don't even bother seeing what I'm allergic to.

@AmbiePam It's very bad, that the doctor does not devote enough attention to your problem.

No doubt I am weird, but I don't have any allergies that I know of, could it be the water?

It could, but I have showered with water from the same source for twenty years, but the breakouts are "fairly" recent. I kind of wondered if something in the pipes could be doing it. Like, old, rusty pipes?

That is super strange. I would absolutely hate showering. Does taking a bath do the same thing?

Could it be fibres in your towels that is irritating your skin?

I don't think so, but it wouldn't hurt for me to research that possibility more.

Does that happen if you are to take showers in other areas? I know I get really bad irritations when I take a shower or drink the water in Mesa here, but I am okay where I am at. It wasn't fun when I had red blotches all over and I was going to a concert that night.

I really cannot remember the last time I took a shower other than in my own apartment.

I agree I think everyone has something … I hope you find some relief for your skin. I have a thing about germs and anxiety
