The Final Stages of Self-Publishing

I absented myself from myLot for five months to complete the final touches of my latest book, ‘Postcards of Palmerston North’. Bringing the book to print challenges me more than the writing. A talented woman at the local university printery designs my books and makes sure they’re ready for publishing. She takes my text and images and turns them into magic. The previous book of mine she designed received positive feedback and once again I’m delighted with what she’s produced this time. I had no idea how I wanted the cover to look, so threw her a couple of suggestions and she came up with some ideas. I wanted to show the cover here, but I think the image is too large as it won't load. Instead this is a photo taken at the launch. You can see the cover on the screen. Local history books always sell well here and this one is no exception. I chose to launch at the beginning of November during Local History Week, knowing Christmas would also result in sales. I understand the book is proving a popular Christmas gift purchase. Self-publishing brings a number of challenges to any writer. I’m fortunate to have found a good team of people to present my book in the best possible way.

Do you use an online service in order to self-publish your books, or do you use a printer in the area and have everything ready to go before they take it over? I wondered what took you away and that's a great reason. Not that any of us have to agree with why we chose to stay away as all our reasons are as good as others overall. I did see a response you gave somewhere on the site recently but hadn't looked you up until now. Sometimes once new authors sell a title or two mainstream, or little publishing houses are more willing to offer them contracts.

So far I've used a local printer. I get everything ready and they design it then produce the book. I'm considering approaching a publisher for my current project.

Self-promoting is exhausting though.

Was only a small print run. In two weeks I've sold just over half my allocation and the book store about half there's.

I pray that it becomes a bestseller, who knows? everything is possible and all your hard work would be compensated with fulfillment and abundance. Oh so that's the reason I have not been seeing you.
