"The time has come ", the Walrus said ,
" to talk of many things,
"Of shoes, of ships and sealing wax
Of cabbages and kings"
Lewis Carroll
This field of cabbages reminds me of that poem. This crop in my friend's farm is going to get ready in a few days.Early winter cabbages are a favourite vegetable of mine.Towards the end of the season they acquire a not nice smell.
I wonder how the leaves come closer and get together as a tight ball. While buying I see people choosing the tightly bound compact ones though I have no idea why.
Cut into very fine shreds and fried with shrimps, in soups and chowmein,as a wrap for minced chicken are some dishes that I have had.
What about you?

My choice would also be for the compact cabbage. That is the seasoned one

Okay that must be the reason why people check if the leaves are tightly bound

@responsiveme Here, cabbages are sold by quantity not weight so if you paying for one cabbage a tightly packed one would give you more for your money.

I like the taste of the tightly bound ones better. Also, if all cabbages are the same price, you are getting more vegetable for your money.
I sometimes buy the pre-shredded bags of cabbage if I want to make dinner quickly.

@responsiveme Yes, I have been reading the responses. I remember my mother feeling the cabbages before deciding on which one to buy.

@JudyEv @responsiveme I also learned from a Japanese vegetable shop owner that once you cut the cabbage (also works for Chinese cabbage) if you use an outer leaf to wrap the cut part it lasts longer and doesn't go brown!

@responsiveme cabbage moths are terrible pests.. its really hard to control them when you grow cabbages organically.
