Devastating News

My daughter; who is only 48 has been experiencing pain radiating from her spine down through her booty, into her thighs and calves and numbing her feet. I told her months ago that she needed her doctor to do an MRI and xrays of her spine. Do ya think her doctor listened to her? Hell no!!!! Instead she sent her to a Chiropractor and to Physical Therapy. Now how in the hell do you know WHO to send someone to unless you have some kind of prior tests or information. After all; the damage that could be created from those 'other' people could be severe. Well guess what?!! I told my daughter if she didn't tell her doctor to do those tests that I was going to travel the 900 miles to kick her a**. The doctor finally did and it's not good news at all. My daughter has: PAD (peravascular disease); Cerebral Vascular Disease and Cervical Disc Disease. All three of which could kill her. The only good information was that there was no fluid impingement in the spinal cord. She is scheduled to see the Neurosurgeon tomorrow morning at 10 am. What's just as bad is that since she lost her job, her insurance only lasts until tomorrow. Oh just duckie!!!!!!!

I am sorry to hear she has all of that, I have degenerative disc so I feel for her, that pain can be very painful. I am glad she is getting help for it but sorry about her insurance. I am sure she could get assistance if she has to have surgery. I had no insurance with my first fusion and the hospital helped me to get Medicaid for it.

Yeah, I have Osteopenia, Osteoporosis. My Cervical discs are like chalk and from the Thorasic to the Lumbar, it looks like Swiss Cheese. My daughter asked me how in the world I've been able to stand the pain (like what she's feeling) for over the last 10 years. Like the Bone Density doctor told me, "I have no idea how you are still vertical." The surgeons told me that I would have to have a metal rod (screws, washers, nuts, bolts) to replace my spine and that I would have to wear a cage drilled into my head and a metal band around my waist for at least a year. I said, no thank you. @cintol

@cintol Yeah, I've talked my brain into believing I'm a 6 on the pain scale instead of the 12 that it is. Baby aspirin & Icy/hot patches are my buddies. It's a shame they haven't come up with an injection of Calcium directly into the discs to rebuild the bones. I'm on Fosamax but it doesn't really seem to be doing much good. I'm not really much of a pill-popper either because I should be taking Calcium and Vitamin D3 pills. The surgeon did say that I needed to make absolutely sure that I keep the muscles strong on either side of the spinal column. Otherwise I'll be in a 4-wheeler. So I still lift 70-pound square bales of hay for my donkeys and lift 40 and 50-pound bags of feed and cat food. Geez, we're a mess.

@nanette64 OMG, that is awful, I couldn't imagine having as much as all that. Its funny what our body will endure when our minds put everything we have toward blocking it out isn't it. I have had 1 fusion already and when I got x-rays the other day he told me he doesn't know how I look as good as I do with the shape of my spine and the 3 more disc degenerating now. We deal with what we have to when need be. I hope you can have something done to relieve some of your pain as well, I am with you though, I won't do the metal either.

Is it "peripheral vascular disease"? There is a treatment before thinking to try surgery. I hope that her doctor will send her to see someone better than he is, unfortunately I see that her insurance will be over in December. I am really sorry for your daughter Nanette.

I think that's the right name for it @LadyDuck . Yeah, I think seeing the neurosurgeon will open her eyes to the fact that her 'regular' doctor is a nutcase. Thank you sweetie

I am so sorry. I'm glad the doctor finally listened and did the tests. Is there a cure, or is it something she will live with the rest of her life? I hope not. She will be in my prayers.

She won't know until tomorrow what the tests show @just4him for him to determine what to do next. Hopefully he can fix the problems and she doesn't have to live with it like I do. I've already lost 3" in height because of crushed discs and like the one surgeon told me; my Lumbar could snap at any time and I'd be paralyzed from the waist down. Thank you for the prayers.

@just4him They said they're gonna start steroid injections in the spine first to reduce the inflammation. Yeah, I'd give anything to turn back time and have mine fixed.

Trying to be healthy is an expensive proposition. Can she afford to Cobra her benefits? Will this lay the groundwork for her to receive disability. She needs a different doctor.

She asked about Cobra benefits and it turns out that the monthly premium would be twice what her rent at the apartment is. I did tell her to apply for SSI as she'll have plenty of medical info to back up the necessity. Yeah, I told her to get rid of that 'doctor'.

I am a candidate for issues connected with weakness of my lower limbs You are right There could be several reasons and unless on goes through those tests it could just be a guessing game. I had three consultations and I know now that it has to do with my core muscles that need to be strengthened. I have to do physio for that

I don't know how long ago she lost her job but Cobra is normally available. I don't know whether that's too late to get still or not. Even though the cost of it is high it still should be better than not having it at all. Although there could be other options too. Most hospitals won't withhold needed care because of lack of insurance or at least out hospital doesn't. I will pray for a miracle for her
