last night's photo - a day late

I took this picture on my walk last night as part of my goal for taking a black and white photo every day between now and Christmas Day. I thought this family of snowmen looked very sweet in my neighbor's yard, and the juxtaposition with the pole next to them made me think of the streetlamp in the middle of the forest inside the wardrobe in C.S. Lewis' book The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Some people have questioned how black and white photos fight depression, and wouldn't it make more sense to take color pictures. Part of what is difficult for me during the holidays is that everything gets loud, busy, hurried, in blazing technicolor, and there's the sense of go, go, go, do everything now! This is my attempt to slow some of that down, to blur some of the craziness, and to find a bit of quiet. I do, of course, love my colored lights and colorful decorations, but sometimes a black and white photo can give me that sense of... without a better way to describe it, the silence after a snowfall and a bit of nostalgia.

May be you live in a go go go country and the holidays lights and noises are too much as you describe. I like soft music, not too bright colors and this is what we get here during the holidays. A sense of peace, not a commercial thing. I was in the United States only one Christmas, it was too much commercial for sure.
