Good Bye Mike McCarthy

Guess I'm not surprised the Green Bay Packers got rid of Mike McCarthy as their head coach. But, the timing sure was unexpected considering the team technically hasn't even been eliminated from playoff contention yet. But, I guess it had to be done. I think he was in a situation that was similar to the guy he replaced, Mike Sherman, with a future Hall of Fame quarterback who was losing respect for him and didn't have any faith in his play calling. Hopefully the new coach will reign Aaron Rodgers in and get him playing at a high level again.

Maybe they think a "fresh voice" will invigorate a last minute push to sneak into the playoffs.

I would agree except for the fact they named Joe Philbin the interim coach. The offense regressed noticeably when he was brought back as offensive coordinator and he is essentially Mike McCarthy Light. I would have much rather seen Mike Pettine given a chance considering his defense, despite being depleted by injuries, keeps fighting and has kept the Packers in games.

They used to call the day after the season ends "black Monday" because of all the head coach firings. Now they're firing them in the middle of the season! (Except for the Cincinnati Bengals, they'll keep bringing that hapless Marvin Lewis back no matter how bad the team gets....)

It's so teams can get a jump on other teams that might be in the search for a new coach. I'm not convinced it really makes a difference though.
