I Would Like to Avoid National Sleepy Head Day
December 5, 2018 10:45am CST
You do not want to be the last family member to wake up on National Sleep Head Day in Finland. If everyone else is up in the morning in your home, and you are not, you will be doused with water, and wake up you will. Now, in some families, the family member who is the only member still asleep in the household on the morning of July 27th, he or she may be tossed into a lake or into the ocean. Talk about a rude awakening. National Sleepy Head Day is based on a legend regarding seven to eight Christian soldiers who slept in a sealed cave for 200 years to avoid being forced to participate in pagan sacrifices. Due to this legend, the people of Finland should not oversleep on July 27th due to possibly remaining asleep for 200 years. The folks in Naantali, Finland, have added a bit of a twist to National Sleepy Head Day every July 27th. A celebrity is chosen to be the one who is thrown into the sea at exactly at 7 a.m. on July 27th. No one in town knows who that celebrity will be until that 7 a.m. hour. Mayors of the city of Naantali have been tossed in the sea as have well-known artists, writers, and politicians.

I've never heard of this, but it is a pretty interesting day. I wouldn't have to worry about being doused with water or thrown into the sea, because I'm always the first one up in my household every day. But my daughter, she's in trouble! haha

I would not want to be a town celebrity due to those folks being chosen to be tossed in the sea with onlookers enjoying every bit. I would like to be an onlooker, however. It is a fun festival, but all the videos on YouTube were not in English so could not use one here.
