Great camera or good photographer? Choose one

As some of you may know, my husband loves taking photos. Whenever he, or someone else, takes a great photo, you sometimes hear the remark ‘he must have a really good camera’. Have you heard this? For fun, we now say it to each other regularly whenever we have a photo that we’re particularly proud of. But no-one says ‘you must have a great oven’ when someone produces a masterpiece of a cake or ‘you must have a great sewing-machine’ when you come up with a beautiful quilt. Any other examples?

@judyev I don’t think anyone has ever looked at my children then commented that they must have a magnificent father.

The most important is the photographer. I ever saw a good photographer can still take qualified photos with a common camera. A good camera sounds to be nice for common people, but it is not a must for a professional photographer. Sometimes I even think it is a waste for a common person who uses professional camera to take photos

If I had a professional camera I'd get it set up then never touch the settings so it would be wasted on me.

@sofssu Oh, I've seen loads of such photos! Taken with an expensive camera but showing people with amputated limbs or half their heads, etc.

I've actually never heard that before unless it's because someone was able to get a macro or whatever it's called of s flower as I can't do that with my camera.

@JudyEv and you have to have special cameras or not a run of the mill cameras anyway. The picture here is amazing, I didn't look at it close earlier. Did he change the coloring on the hills or was that done by his camera?

A camera is just the tool. Granted these days there are a lot of whistles and bells on cameras that "help", but a really well shot photo has to do a lot with the person behind the camera. Yah, when I come up with a really great myLot post, people must think I must have a really cool keyboard .

Great photo ! I take mainly crappy pictures. It is only by accident that there is a good one times to times, because the camera is good.

A great camera is a plus but I think however good is your camera, there are qualities a photographer have that some does not have even with a good camera.

@JudyEv - It is a fabulous photo! It almost doesn't even look like a photo ... more like a painting. No camera could do that alone. It takes a great photographer to pull off something like this!

@DeborahDiane One of Vince's photo sites put up photographer cartoons and today's showed a guy folding laundry and his wife is standing in the doorway with her arms folded and saying "washing dishes yesterday, folding laundry today. What part of 'no you can't buy an $11,000 lens; don't you understand?" I think that lady's name is Judy!

If that was taken with a cheap cell phone, you must be a great photographer. Purely by accident we came across a big bike race in France. The Availles-Limousine race just after the Tour de France. We joined in with the crowds on the sides of the road, watched all the float things and press cars go through then all the bike-riders. It was quite exciting. This man wasn't actually in the race.

Can´t hink of any right now. I take okay photos and its not the greatest Camera but I have learned to handle it. If someone makes a cake I usually think its them that are good at making cakes not the oven.

@JudyEv You are so right and its the maker of the Cake who made it. Not very good Ovens here at all mostly faulty and bad quality unless you have an old fashioned one to use.
