I cried several minutes ago. My eyes were filled with tears. I sobbed, and watery nasal discharges somehow flowed out of my nares. I cried… while peeling and slicing the small, medium, and big-sized onions for the dish that I cooked for dinner. It is a simple dish of onions, tomatoes, and eggs sauteed with lots of cooking oil. The eggs were not done well, but just medium-cooked. My son asked me what I cooked and when I said ‘’eggs’’, he now wants to have our dinner. With this, I am logging out ---see you tomorrow. How do you peel or slice onions without shedding tears?

I refrain from inhaling while slicing hmmmm They said you can also whistle.. or put a fan beside you so that the vapor won't reach your nose.

yes, me too. but even in white onions, do you still cry? i think these white onions have lesser juices that can cause tears flowing.

Didn't they say that you use a wet knife to cut the onions so you don't cry?

i always wash the knife before peeling and slicing the onions. i don't wipe it, so the knife is wet when i peel and cut.

Naturally, you should have used an onion slicer to avoid all these tears and water from eyes etc

by onion slicer, would this mean the onions get peeled by the slicer too? or you yourself should peel it? either way, i think i will still shed tears.

I keep the onions in the refrigerator at least 3 hours before peeling and slicing, it's the only method that works.

@ridingbet BIG MISTAKE! If you warm them the effect is lost. Cut them when they are still cold.

I think soaking onions in water for an hour before peeling may help, though I haven't tried it.

Cut the onions near the sink. Let the water run and hold the knife and the onion repeatedly under the running water. This helps a lot. Give me a shout when you've tried it. :-)

@ridingbet Don't soak the onions and don't use lukewarm water. Use running cold water. Just hold the onion and the knife under it repeatedly.

I've heard peeling them under cold water helps. Slicing them, I don't think there is a way to avoid the tears unless you're a quick slicer.
