The progression of my Christmas cactus

Midland, Michigan
December 6, 2018 11:33am CST
@leny34 wanted to see my cactus when the blooms got larger since she's never seen one before. I've been taking pictures of it as each bloom grew a little more. I'm still not watering it much and it looks like what you see here may be all the blooms I get this season. Although maybe the rest will get moving if I remember to water it again later. As you can see Putri, this looks nothing like the fruit of a dragon fruit. I don't like doing back-to-back posts but I've needed to share this for awhile and a notification I got from her will fall off my page soon and then I'd have no idea who wanted to know.

We've had a Christmas cactus in our family for decades. I don't really know how old it is now. Maybe 50 years.

So is it passed from parents to kids? Who had that now and if not you do you have one of your own. I know we've talked about this previously but I don't remember whether you ever shared an image of you have one

@MarshaMusselman I can't send a photo. It lives in a different part of the country - about 300 miles away from me - with my cousin's daughter. The last time I saw it it was still going strong. I haven't got one because the flat where I live now hasn't got broad window sills. Yet the other people living with us in the same house have got a small one on one of the window sills in the staircase.

@MALUSE it's too cold here too have them right on the windowsills that's why I use tables in the room. This one is on a plant stand.

Mine is blooming really well! It really needs a new container though. I water it once a week.

I've watered mine about three times in the past six months. I forget until it begins blooming and then try to water it at least that much. The color of your is pretty, thanks for sharing the picture.

@marguicha I tends to underwater mine. Maybe you're giving yours too much water? How often do you water yours?

So you have one too along with your sil? I went to get water today for mine but must have forgotten because I never did water it. Poor thing.

Cactus are a strange species. Packed with thorns producing exotic flowers.

@allknowing I don't think so. The picky ones might be more common in certain parts of the country or world but they aren't the only types.

This type of cactus, the Christmas cactus has no thorns like most other cacti.

@tech40 I don't think it produced a smell at all. It neither smells good nor does it stink. Did you see the picture shaggin posted of her Christmas cactus?

Do you grow any houseplants, popciclecold? (By chance, is there a short version of your call name I may call you when talking with you here on myLot? If you'd rather not give me a shorter name, that is fine. I do tend to talk more to people when I can remember their call name, though.) If you do grow houseplants, do you know what types of plants they are?

We just enjoy them. Being in Michigan with cold winters it's nice to have houseplants that bloom. And they are pretty. They aren't only enjoyed by those of us in colder winter climates, people elsewhere enjoy them too.

Thanks. It would look even better if more of it were flowering, but this is typical for me since I barely remember to water it at all. Have you ever had one, Carol?
