Recently I came across an article about a Nebraska Elementary School Principal who decided it was inappropriate to have certain Christmas related decorations in the classrooms. One item on her list really caught my attention... Candy Canes. According to the memo sent out to staff members the Principal cites the canes "J" shaped form as representing Jesus, and religious symbols have no place in school. She went on to explain her ban in detail stating how the red color on the canes represent Christian blood and the white his resurrection. Other Christmas related items and traditions were also on the Principal's banned list. What do you think of the Principal's actions? Source- www.ketv.com Photo- google images/candywarehouse.com

Well, she got the reason for the Candy Cane right. It's great she told everyone the reason for the candy cane. Nothing like an atheist witness for Jesus. I have to laugh. The more people try to take Jesus out of Christmas, the more he remains. You can't take Christ out of Christmas, not even with an X. X in Greek is Christ.

@dgobucks226 That's totally crazy and unrealistic. What is she telling the kids with her example? She better be careful when she drives anywhere. There are red and green stoplights.

In taking something to the extreme she actually helps promote Jesus and the meaning of Christmas. BTW: other list items were aimed at Santa Claus I believe. She put Christmas trees, ornaments as gifts and the colors red or green on the list too

@dgobucks226 Maybe Santa got too close one year and almost ran her over with his reindeer. Yes, definitely a stupid move on her part. Probably doesn't like Christmas in general.

Same as JJ, the Principal is an idiot and we all know what the candy canes represent, the shepherds' canes.

She also was not fond of: Reindeer trees music/caroling gifted ornaments movies anything in the color red or green. Fortunately for her God even watches over idiots....

How silly is that, to ban candy canes. What happened to the Christmas spirit that people have to moan and complain about silly things like that?

@dgobucks226 Yes. Scrooge turned out to be a good guy in the end. Maybe this person needs to have the spirits of Christmas visit her.

Yes I second your comment Susan. I would say without question that Principal and Scrooge would be best of friends except even Mr. Scrooge was shown the light, lol.

What they need to do is ban everything. That’ll solve the problem. (And yes, this is sarcasm.)

For a country noted for its diversity and openness to respecting all faiths we seem to have fallen far short of reaching that goal....

To put it bluntly, I think the Principal is an idiot. The secular trappings of a Santa Claus Christmas have, in reality, little to do with celebrating the birth of Jesus and everything to do with gross, blatant, and morbid consumerism.

This is a new one on me, but we were told in some schools the children were poking others with the candy canes. Some teachers chose to keep candy canes out of their classrooms.

Kids can find creative ways to cause mischief can't they? I'm sure there are other Christmas items kids could also use in a mischievous way. It would be a shame to ban all of them Perhaps better teacher supervision would be a better alternative than removing these items. Here is the article I found for your viewing. Appreciate your feedback!

It is definitely exaggerated. The appropriate saying for such an attitude is 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater'.

@dgobucks226 When I think of a candy cane I do not think about any kind of religion. I think of how it tasted and it tasted quite good.

If her real intent was to remove the focus from Christ or Jesus, she has just backfired. Hey, and what about the alternatively flavored and colored candy canes, or the peppermint sticks that are red and white but have no shepherd's crook? I am sure the educational dollars in that community could be better spent?
