A gift basket for a friend

When we had our first indoor house concert we rang the party hire place to order 50 white plastic chairs. When the proprietor learnt that we were not taking a profit from the evening but giving the door sales to the musicians, he refused to let us pay for the chairs. We thought this was very generous of him as he makes his living hiring out party equipment.
Since then, he has never let us pay for the chairs and with the last concert he rang at the last minute to see if we needed chairs as the weather looked bad and he thought we might need to hold the concert indoors. Mostly he delivers them and sometimes we pick them up with the trailer.
Although we send him free tickets for each concert, he is rarely able to come. So this Christmas we decided we’d give him a gift basket. To me, gift baskets always look really attractive but sometimes the bottom half is filled with tissue paper and the only ones I like are very expensive.
So we chose an attractive basket from the op shop (thrift store) and filled it ourselves, mostly with local products – a bottle of wine, some home-make jams and a few other bits and pieces including a collection of short stories from my writing group. So delivering the basket is now on our to-do list.

Gift baskets are a bit like a lucky dip aren't they?

The commercial baskets all look great but once you take them apart, the bottom is full of tissue paper and really, the value isn't there.

That's really nice of him. He deserves a nice gift basket.

It's your thoughtfulness that stands above the goodies in the basket, Ms. Judy.

I hope so because we really do appreciate his generosity - and ringing last time to see if it would help! We had just decided to have the people indoors but they all bring varying size outdoor chairs. The plastic chairs are much better and take less room.

The ones in the shop look great but sometimes there is less in them than it at first appears.

They are always better if you put them together yourself. He sounds like a really nice guy.

That sounds like a very bountiful gift basket.
I can relate to the gift boxes etc..Attractively packed but they hold small quantities of the actual stuff.
Yours is a very good idea
