Milkman

My Mother mentioned to me when I was young about how when she was a young girl, they had a Milkman deliver their milk to their door. And when it was delivered, it was in glass bottles and was not homogenized, the cream would rise to the top and the bottle had to be shaked to evenly distribute the milk before drinking. I thought that was interesting as a child. But, by the time I was a young girl, Milkmen still did exist and on one occasion that I remember, my Mom did order some from a Dairy and a Milkman did deliver it. I am pretty sure it was homogenized. Do you remember Milkmen?

I remember that song, couldn't tell you how it goes, but I do remember hearing it. Not that I was around when it was first a hit, but I do like listening to music from the 40s.

I remember when the milk was in a glass bottle with the cream on the top, I am surely older than you are, or in Italy this tradition lasted longer.

No, but I wish I did because it just always sounded so great to me to have a guy bring milk to the house.

I lived on a farm and we had our own cows but there were milkmen in the town who delivered milk by horse and cart. And before my mother was married they had a dairy and delivered milk to the townsfolk, again by horse and cart.

@playertwo Wow, you are very young. And I've just read your comment about you getting older and wiser. You have a way to go yet so you'll be very wise at the end of your life's journey.

I think it would have been neat to experience that but that was all long before my time. On the property I live was a creamery.

Yes, I remember the milkmen. They delivered to our house when I was a kid. My mother used to pour off the cream at the top into a pitcher for her and my father's coffee and tea. I used to drink it when no one was looking. hehehehe I love cream. I think by the time I was 13-14 the deliveries had stopped. There are still places that you can get it delivered but none near where I live.

When I was very young, we still had milkmen and one of my uncles was one. I got to go with him a few times on his route and I thought it was great. This was when I was 4 or 5, 1968 or 69 and then just a couple of years later we had no more milkmen in town.

By that time it was homogenized but we did have them here when my kids were babies. But I grew up with a milk cow and nothing tastes better.

I sure do. As a child spending summers in the Catskill mountains, there was a milkman that delivered what everyone needed. I always made sure my babysitter also got orange juice and chocolate milk. All in glass bottles. He would collect those bottles everytime he came.
